The choice between the roles depends on the specific transit mode and employer focus.

What are some common challenges faced by transit cleaners, and how are they typically addressed?

Transit cleaners often face challenges such as working in fast-paced environments, dealing with high passenger traffic, and addressing unexpected spills or messes. To manage these, teams are usually well-coordinated, with clear protocols for rapid response and prioritizing tasks. Cleaners may work early mornings, late nights, or weekends to ensure vehicles and stations are ready for service. Regular training and the use of safety equipment help maintain efficiency and safety while handling cleaning chemicals and equipment.

What is a transit cleaner?

Transit cleaners are professionals responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of public transportation vehicles, such as buses, trains, and subways. Their duties include sweeping, mopping, sanitizing surfaces, emptying trash, and sometimes performing minor maintenance tasks. By ensuring vehicles are clean and presentable, transit cleaners help provide a safe and comfortable environment for passengers and staff. This role is essential in promoting public health and maintaining a positive image of transit services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transit cleaner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Transit Cleaner, you need attention to detail, physical stamina, and a basic understanding of cleaning protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industrial cleaning equipment, cleaning chemicals, and safety procedures is typically required. Reliability, time management, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are important soft skills. These skills ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for passengers and help maintain the operational efficiency of transit systems.

Job description

NOW HIRING — 2 Cleaning Spots in Edina, MN (Weekly Store Clean + Monthly Window Cleaning)

Location: Galleria shopping center area, Edina, MN 55435 (exact address shared once you're confirmed)

ABOUT THE ROLE

We're North Co Commercial Cleaning, hiring for a retail store owned by a national home goods retailer. Store name and exact address are shared after onboarding. This is steady, recurring work — same store, same day, every time. Two openings:

1) STORE CLEANER — Weekly

2) WINDOW CLEANER — Monthly

Tell us which spot you're applying for — or say you're open to either. Soonest confirmed spots win.

Both hires also team up twice a year for a paid deep clean, and each covers the other's service as backup when needed — at that service's pay. Extra paid visits.

SCHEDULE & PAY (per visit, per role)

DEEP CLEAN — First job, both hires together

- Thursday, August 14 — 6:00 AM start (fixed date)

- $85 per person per visit

- Average time on site: 1.5–2 hours per person (could be a little less or a little more depending on experience and getting a system down)

- Effective hourly: roughly $43–$57/hr

- Repeats twice a year as an extra paid visit

STORE CLEANER — Weekly

- Starts Tuesday, August 18 — 8:00 AM

- $45 flat per visit

- Average time on site: 1–1.5 hours (could be a little less or a little more depending on experience and getting a system down after the first couple visits)

- Effective hourly: roughly $30–$45/hr

- Same day every week

WINDOW CLEANER — Monthly

- Starts Tuesday, August 18 — 8:00 AM

- $50 flat per visit

- Average time on site: 45 min–1 hour (could be a little less or a little more depending on experience and getting a system down after the first couple visits)

- Effective hourly: roughly $50–$65/hr

- Same day every month

The August 14 deep clean date is firm. Weekly/monthly day is set from the start dates above — tell us if there's a day you CAN'T work going forward and we'll plan around it.

Pay lands 24–48 hours after the job is completed, checked out, and confirmed to manager satisfaction. Check-in, photos, and check-out are done through links we provide.

Parking: reimbursed only with a receipt showing date, time in, time out, place, and total price.

THE WORK

Deep Clean (first visit + semi-annual): full top-to-bottom detail of the store, both cleaners together.

Store Clean (weekly): dusting fixtures, shelving, and displays, spot cleaning doors and glass, vacuuming and mopping floors, cleaning and restocking the restroom, trash out. Detailed checklist provided after onboarding.

Windows (monthly): interior and exterior storefront glass — scrub, squeegee, detail all edges and corners, wipe sills dry. Detailed checklist provided after onboarding.

RELIABILITY — READ THIS

Service happens on the agreed day, every time. Any schedule change needs 48 hours' notice. No-shows are the one thing that ends this relationship — if you can't make it, you tell us ahead of time, period.

REQUIREMENTS

- 21 or older

- Reliable personal transportation (rideshare/transit does not qualify)

- Window Cleaner spot: real experience with a window scrubber and squeegee

- Comfortable completing a standard onboarding screening

- Communication is the #1 priority — respond to messages, show up, speak up early if something changes

SUPPLIES

Client provides restroom/breakroom consumables. North Co provides all chemicals and equipment — OR bring your own for a per-visit bonus: +$10 store clean, +$5 windows, +$15 both. Tell us what you have — all, some, or none is fine.

Store clean list: vacuum, mop and bucket (or flat mop with pads), broom/dustpan or dust mop, all-purpose cleaner, disinfectant, glass cleaner, microfiber cloths, dusting tool, restroom cleaner, scrubber/deck brush.

Window list: window scrubber/applicator, squeegee, glass solution, microfiber or scrim cloths, scraper/razor, bucket. Step stool or extension pole handy for tops of glass.

DRESS CODE

Slip-resistant shoes recommended. Clean plain blue or black shirt, jeans or non-athletic shorts — nothing ripped, no sweatpants. Hair tied back, arrive presentable.

PHOTOS & CHECK-OUT

Before/after photos and videos every visit through your check-in link — this is how you get paid. More is always better.
