Job Summary
The Welder is responsible for joining, repairing, and finishing metal components used in power distribution equipment and facility maintenance work at Emerald Transformer's Waco, TX facility. This position performs welding, cutting, grinding, and related repair work while following sketches, design specifications, work instructions, and established safety protocols. The Welder supports equipment inspection, welding-related troubleshooting, and repair decisions that help keep transformer work moving safely, accurately, and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform TIG, MIG, and stick welding, as qualified, to join metal parts, fill seams, repair holes, and complete welding work on metal components.
  • Weld, cut, grind, and finish power distribution equipment and items associated with facility maintenance.
  • Read, interpret, and apply sketches, specifications, design information, and work instructions before and during welding or repair work.
  • Inspect equipment, workpieces, welded structures, and surrounding work areas to verify safe conditions, proper fit, and work quality.
  • Assist with design input and troubleshooting related to welding, metal repair, and transformer equipment repair needs.
  • Maintain accurate records needed for job costing, work tracking, and departmental documentation.
  • Use basic hand tools, gauges, test equipment, grinders, cutting tools, and related shop equipment safely and effectively.
  • Follow company safety programs, environmental requirements, standard operating procedures, and all required personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment, including eye protection, gloves, hearing protection, respirator, and other assigned protective equipment.
  • Work safely around industrial hazards that may include moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, scaffolding or elevated areas, high heat, chemicals, fumes, dust, gases, oils, cutting fluids, and poor ventilation.
  • Perform physically demanding work that may include climbing, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, reaching, stooping, crouching, kneeling, grasping, lifting, repetitive motion, and other manual activities.

Minimum Requirements
Education/Certifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • TIG, MIG, stick welding certifications, or other welding credentials are not required but will be considered.

Experience
  • 2+ years of prior experience required in MIG welding and plasma cutting required.
  • Prior welding, fabrication, repair, transformer, industrial equipment, or facility maintenance experience will be considered.
  • Prior experience reading sketches, design specifications, or written work instructions preferred.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend written instructions.
  • Basic arithmetic skills needed to complete measurements, records, and job-costing documentation.
  • Working knowledge of welding, cutting, grinding, metal repair, and safe hot-work practices appropriate to the assigned task.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools, gauges, test equipment, grinders, cutting equipment, and related shop tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret design specifications, sketches, and job instructions.
  • Ability to inspect work, identify concerns, and communicate repair or safety issues to the supervisor.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records for job costing and work tracking.
  • Ability to perform mechanical or skilled-trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature using close visual acuity at arm's reach.
  • Ability to work around industrial hazards, including moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, scaffolding or elevated work areas, high heat, and chemicals.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including respiratory protection when required.
  • Ability to perform heavy work, including exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or more than 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • Demonstrated attention to safety, quality, accuracy, and housekeeping in an industrial work environment.
  • Demonstrated independent decision-making and practical problem-solving ability when work conditions change.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding work status, repair needs, safety concerns, and material or equipment issues.
