Job Title: Power Transformer Field Service Technician / Engineer

Employment Type: Contract (1099)

Location: Houston, TX

Travel Required: 50% – 70% (Field travel required)

Job Summary

We are seeking an independent Power Transformer Service Engineer (1099 Contractor) based in Houston, TX, to lead and support the installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of power transformers and high-voltage substation equipment. This role focuses primarily on transformer field services and diagnostic testing, while providing supporting coverage for connected systems like inverters and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine operations & maintenance (O&M), preventive maintenance, and field troubleshooting on power transformers and auxiliary substation equipment.
  • Conduct comprehensive diagnostic electrical testing—including Turns Ratio, Insulation Resistance, Winding Resistance, Power Factor/Tan Delta, and Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA)—along with dielectric oil sampling and analysis.
  • Inspect physical components, diagnose complex mechanical/electrical failures, and produce detailed field service reports.
  • Assist with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and field commissioning for new power transformer units.
  • Maintain strict safety standards (OSHA/NFPA 70E) and serve as the technical liaison between internal engineering teams, equipment vendors, and site contractors.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be willing and eligible to work as a 1099 Independent Contractor.
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM field.
  • Based in (or willing to relocate to) Houston, TX, with the ability to travel 50% – 70% to customer sites and field project locations.
  • Eligible to work in the United States (CPT / OPT eligible).
  • Strong coursework, academic projects, or foundational background in electrical power systems and high-voltage equipment.
  • Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (spoken and written) is a strong plus.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and technical problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to work independently in field environments.
