Job description

The Environmental Compliance Specialist supports facility environmental compliance programs and sustainability initiatives by assisting with regulatory inspections, monitoring activities, waste management programs, environmental reporting, and compliance recordkeeping. This position works closely with EHS professionals, site leadership, operations teams, maintenance personnel, and external regulatory agencies to help ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulations and internal company standards.
This role is ideal for an individual with an Associate's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Occupational Safety & Health, Chemistry, Industrial Technology, or a related field who is looking to build a career in environmental compliance and sustainability. The position focuses on facility environmental compliance and does not include ownership of occupational safety programs, workers' compensation administration, product environmental compliance, or EHS systems administration.
Essential Responsibilities Environmental Compliance Support
  • Conduct environmental compliance inspections, sampling, testing, and monitoring activities.
  • Manage environmental compliance programs including:
    • Air Emissions Compliance
    • Hazardous Waste Management
    • Industrial Wastewater Compliance
    • Stormwater Compliance
    • Refrigerant Management
    • Compressed Gas Management
    • Universal Waste Management
    • Recycling and Waste Reduction Programs
  • Conduct routine environmental inspections, audits, and compliance assessments.
  • Manage environmental permit compliance and permit condition tracking.
  • Facilitate management of chemical inventories and environmental compliance records.
  • Coordinate spill prevention, response, and preparedness activities.
  • Support environmental incident investigations and corrective action follow-up.
  • Provide environmental compliance consultation and support to operating departments.

Regulatory Reporting & Compliance Tracking
  • Maintain environmental compliance records, permits, and documentation.
  • Collect, organize, and validate environmental compliance data.
  • Coordinate preparation and submission of environmental reports to regulatory agencies.
  • Track permit conditions, compliance obligations, inspections, and reporting deadlines.
  • Support interactions with regulatory agencies and third-party environmental service providers.

Waste Management
  • Conduct hazardous waste accumulation area inspections.
  • Facilitate hazardous waste characterization, labeling, storage, and shipment activities.
  • Management of recycling and waste minimization programs.
  • Coordinate environmental waste service vendors and disposal contractors.
  • Waste profiling and maintenance of disposal records.

Environmental Program Administration
  • Support environmental procedures, standards, and work instructions.
  • Environmental training and awareness initiatives.
  • Maintain environmental compliance databases and tracking tools.
  • Coordinate environmental audits, assessments, and corrective action programs.
  • Support environmental management system initiatives, including ISO 14001 activities where applicable.

Sustainability Support
  • Assist with collection and tracking of environmental sustainability metrics.
  • Support recycling, waste reduction, and resource conservation initiatives.
  • Assist with environmental performance reporting and sustainability projects.
  • Participate in initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact and improving resource efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
One of the following:
  • Associate's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Occupational Safety & Health, Chemistry, Industrial Technology, Natural Sciences, or a related field; or
  • Two-year technical degree in a related discipline; or
  • Equivalent combination of education, military experience, environmental certifications, and related environmental compliance experience.

Experience
  • 0-3 years of environmental compliance, EHS, manufacturing, laboratory, facilities, industrial operations, or related experience.
  • Internship, cooperative education, military environmental experience, or environmental field experience preferred.

Certifications
Preferred certifications include one or more of the following:
  • 24-Hour or 40-Hour HAZWOPER
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry
  • DOT Hazardous Materials Shipping
  • Stormwater Inspector Training
  • Refrigerant Management Training
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Associate Hazardous Materials Manager (AHMM)
  • Other environmentally related professional certifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Basic understanding of environmental regulations and compliance programs.
  • Knowledge of hazardous waste, wastewater, stormwater, air emissions, chemical management, or environmental permitting principles.
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to conduct inspections and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn environmental management systems and EHS software applications.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to compliance.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to work in manufacturing, warehouse, laboratory, and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to walk through production, warehouse, utility, and waste management areas on a routine basis.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection when required.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or move equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely handle and maneuver environmental compliance equipment, waste containers, spill response materials, and mostly empty 55-gallon drums.
  • Ability to occasionally climb ladders, navigate stairs, and access elevated work areas during inspections and audits.
  • Ability to conduct inspections in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to support other company facilities.
