Job description

POSITION TITLE: Part-Time AVID Tutorย  REPORTS TO: School Principal BEGINNING DATE: Open Until Filled








The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program is a structured college preparatory system working directly with schools and districts. It includes a schoolwide approach to curriculum and rigor and serves as a direct support structure for first-generation college goers, grades K-12.ย 

NATURE OF WORK:
Part time positions available at a variety of Middle School and High School sites to support the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program. Hours may vary, up to 18 hours per week.ย  Personal vehicle required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Experience working with diverse learners
  • Knowledgeable about, understand, and adhere to district/site policies and procedures
  • Knowledgeable about AVID and its mission, philosophy, and methodologies to successfully fill the role
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Working knowledge of core academic subjects
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions
  • Flexibility with strong skills in using superior judgment when making decisions
  • Ability to establish effective and positive rapport with staff and students
  • Ability to maintain order and discipline in the classroom


EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent required (must include an emphasis in mathematics, reading, writing and content knowledge)
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA required
  • If selected for employment, candidate must participate in 16 hours of training.ย 

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:ย  9 months per school year


SALARY:ย  $15 per hour for candidates who do not hold a North Carolina Teaching License

FLSA Status:ย Non-Exempt


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Follow all rules, policies, and procedures of Onslow County Schools, along with state and federal regulations pertaining to schools.
  2. Provide academic assistance to assigned tutees, either in a group or individually.
  3. Help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
  4. Help students develop self-confidence and reduce fear of failure in academic work.
  5. Help students develop study skills necessary for academic success.
  6. Establish and maintain rapport with the assigned students.
  7. Serve as a role model for students.
  8. Report to the AVID elective class on time and prepared to work.
  9. Show initiative by doing what needs to be done without waiting to be asked.
  10. Are well-groomed and dress appropriately, according to district and school guidelines.
  11. Willing to ask questions and provide constructive feedback to improve the quality of the AVID class.
  12. Collaborate with AVID teachers, students, and other tutors.
  13. Maintain strict confidentiality for all matters.
  14. Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested by the principal.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to be physically active, which includes, but is not limited to standing, pushing, pulling, squatting, bending, sitting, and walking, including repetitive motions.
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms routinely.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds routinely and 30 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to facilitate the evacuation of students during emergency situations and/or drills.
  • Must be able to visually, auditorily, and physically monitor student performance and conduct.
