Job description

Job Title: Teaching Artist (Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Theater, Stem, Robotics, Coding & Film)

Department: Arts & Literacy - Youth Development

Reports to: Program Site Director

Date Posting: July 24, 2026

Date Available: September 8, 2025

Salary Range: $25 - $35 hourly

Work Hours: 21 hours/week during school year from 9/8 to 6/15. 30-35 hours/week during 6-8 week summer programming. After school hours vary by site. Occasional Saturdays and evenings.

Location + (in person): Bushwick, Williamsburg, Fort Greene, Corona, East Elmhurst, and Jamaica, Queens.

About Program:


The Arts & Literacy Youth Development Program is an innovative and comprehensive afterschool and summer program serving Brooklyn and Queens youth ages 5-14. We provide education, creative arts, youth leadership, and health programming. The program builds leadership and literacy through creative writing, visual arts, drama, photography, video, music, yoga, creative movement/dance, and apprenticeships. We engage entire families through monthly family literacy workshops, parent organizing, and comprehensive services available through the agency's other programs.


POSITION SUMMARY:


The Teaching Artist is a focal point position in the Arts & Literacy Youth Development Department, central to delivering quality arts and literacy education programming. The teaching artist provides dynamic, culturally sensitive arts instruction that engages students in project-based learning while supporting their social-emotional development as part of our collaborative program team.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Instruction & Curriculum Development

  • Teach assigned content area
  • Develop and implement sports activities that enhance understanding of sportsmanship, health, nutrition, and anatomy
  • Develop student presentations and family engagement activities for Family Art Nights
  • Participate in multi-site tournaments


Student Supervision & Safety

  • Always supervise and ensure the safety and welfare of students, including during field trips or activities outside of program site
  • Keep students engaged and create a classroom culture of respect and participation
  • Maintain accurate attendance for assigned students


Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate with parents regarding student's progress in the program
  • Make referrals to Art Therapist, as needed
  • Supervise interns/assistants placed within the classroom
  • Regularly check emails and respond in a timely manner, at least within 24 hours


Program Support

  • Participate in events to recruit and retain program participants
  • Maintain required enrollment in classes
  • Participate in agency wide events
  • Participate in all mandatory assigned trainings
  • Any other duties as assigned


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


  • BA/BFA in professional content area
  • 3 years' experience as a teaching artist required
  • Ability to create lesson plans and document curriculum
  • Excellent classroom management
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Working knowledge of NYC Arts Cultural Community
  • Experience working with diverse youth populations
  • Occasional flexible schedule required (some weekends and evenings)



Preferred but not required


  • Master's degree in related field (arts education, education, youth development)
  • Bilingual capabilities (Spanish/Mandarin/French)
