Job description

Job Overview

Control Systems Engineer in the Maintenance and Engineering team at BlueScope Coated Products. Responsible for design, installation, and maintenance of robotic and automation equipment, PLC ladder logic, and reliability programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as project leader for new equipment procurement, installation, commissioning, and training.
  • Lead feasibility studies for robotic or automation equipment.
  • Direct maintenance, reliability, and performance activities to meet required targets.
  • Train operations and maintenance users on system operations and maintenance.
  • Rewrite or modify PLC ladder logic to achieve key performance indicators.
  • Act as liaison between operators, leaders, and management, ensuring safety.
  • Evaluate PLC systems and recommend replacement before extensive downtime.
  • Manage capital projects and ROI calculations.
  • Develop and review standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Organize training material for process, production, and safety knowledge transfer.
  • Perform safeguard techniques; document all program changes.
  • Compile data for key maintenance performance indicators and recommend improvements.
  • Assist with safety issues, incident reporting, and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Provide expertise in PLC/drive systems and assist other BCP maintenance activities as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • 3+ years of automation/robotics/mechatronics project work.
  • Record of automation project implementation from feasibility to handover.
  • PLC experience, preferably Allen Bradley (SLC 500, RSlogix 5/500/5000, PLC5, ControlLogix, Micrologix, Panelview).
  • Ability to program PLC mathematical equations (slope, strip weight tension, etc.).
  • Capability to program and commission on multiple platforms.
  • Desired: 5+ years of automation/robotics/mechatronics project work and heavy manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with metals, coating, roll forming or industrial maintenance projects.
  • Strong project management skills: budgeting, design, timeline, documentation.
  • Problem‑solving skills using mechanics, electricity, and fluid dynamics.
  • Computer proficiency: AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, SAP.
