Certified Pharmacy Technician

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Performs a variety of technical pharmacy services in a Pharmacy or direct patient care setting.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Reads physician's prescribed medication orders specifying the name, quantity, strength, frequency and method of administration of drugs and other pharmaceutical products; selects the medication from pre-packaged, or unit dose stock and counts out the prescribed quantity; places the drug in appropriate patient medication drawer; presents the filled order to the Pharmacist for review.

Initiates and maintains patient information records showing all medications ordered for individual patients; transcribes the name, dosage, date and method of administration of each medication.

Delivers patient medication orders to wards; checks patient identification and issues filled medication orders to outpatients.

Receives and reads orders for parental solutions; prepares medication orders for intravenous and intravenous piggyback solutions by measuring exact amounts of the drug and base solution using percentages, fractions, ratios, multiplication, and division; uses calibrated vials, syringes, and standard laboratory measuring devices in preparing and measuring out the amount specified; presents the filled order to the Pharmacist for review.

Assists the Pharmacy Supervisor in training Pharmacy Technician Trainees in the day-to-day duties of Pharmacy Technicians in the area assigned.

Maintains inventory of Pharmacy stock; requisitions and shelves replenishment stock.

Provide clerical and technical assistance in the development, management and operation of the Pharmacy to effectively and efficiently serve the facility's clients and clinical services.

Operate the Pharmacy business systems according to established procedures and standards, to include ordering, receiving, stocking, pricing, inventory and billing.

Assist in the receipt and dispensing of orders from physicians, clients and facility services according to established procedures and standards.

Assist in the development and maintenance of appropriate records and reports according to established procedures and standards, and as directed.

Prepare insurance summaries; audit procedures; order entry in computer system; third-party claims submission and reconciliation; unit-dose packaging and manufacturing.

Assist in the effective and efficient operation of the department; participate actively in relevant department activity; provide suggestions on the development and operation of the Pharmacy; collaborate with other staff/administration in the development, management and operation of the department and the program.

Maintain computer-based systems.

Recommend methods to improve pharmacy services.

Maintain and demonstrate responsibility for self, and with respect to the effects and results of acts and efforts related to the program and organization.

Assists in conducting Pharmacy ward or clinic inspections; checks for outdated, deteriorated or contaminated drugs, overstock, and proper storage of pharmaceutical products. Reviews drug usage records to examine for unusual or high usage; assists in conducting investigations to determine the reason for high or unusual usage of drugs.

Pharmacy Technicians are responsible for filling prescribed patient medication orders, transcribing patient medication records, preparing parenteral solutions, and for assisting Pharmacists in performing audit control functions such as conducting hospital ward inspections for proper pharmaceutical storage and investigating incidents of unusual drug usage.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Specific knowledge of pharmaceuticals, pharmacy practices required to fill patient medication orders, preparation of parenteral solutions, and in conducting examinations concerning the proper storage and usage of drugs.

Ability to read and understand written English words and sentences.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing English words and sentences.

Ability to understand spoken English words and sentences.

Ability to communicate with others by telephone.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Successful completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program conducted by the Department of Health Services or successful completion of a junior college or college Pharmacy Technician program approved by the Department of Health Services or one year of experience in a Pharmacy performing technical pharmacy services such as unit dose drug distribution, filling patient medication orders, preparing parenteral solutions, and transcribing and excerpting drug orders from patient medication records or completion of at least one year of a four year academic program in an accredited College of Pharmacy.
