Job description

Water treatment professionals ensure safe, clean water by operating, maintaining, and monitoring water treatment systems while complying with environmental and safety regulations.

Core Responsibilities

Water treatment roles involve a variety of tasks depending on the position, but common responsibilities include:

  • Operating and maintaining water treatment equipment and systems, including pumps, chemical feed machines, and filtration units .
  • Monitoring water quality through routine testing and analysis to detect contaminants and ensure safety standards are met .
  • Adjusting chemical dosages to maintain water purity and compliance with health regulations .
  • Inspecting and troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and control systems to prevent malfunctions.
  • Maintaining accurate records of water treatment processes, test results, and maintenance activities.
  • Ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including environmental and safety standards.
  • Performing preventative maintenance and responding promptly to emergencies or equipment failures.
  • Collaborating with engineers and environmental professionals to implement operational procedures and safety protocols.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Educational background: High school diploma or GED for entry-level roles; bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related fields for specialist or managerial positions .
  • Certifications: Water treatment operations certification or industry-specific safety passports (e.g., EUSR) may be required.
  • Technical skills: Knowledge of SCADA systems, automated control software, and water treatment processes.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities to interpret water quality data and troubleshoot equipment .
  • Physical capability: Ability to perform manual labor, work in confined spaces, and handle equipment in various weather conditions.
  • Soft skills: Strong communication, teamwork, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols.

Work Environment

Water treatment professionals may work in municipal water treatment plants, industrial facilities, or environmental consulting firms. The work can be physically demanding, involve outdoor tasks, and require shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays
