Practice environment
This is a blended administrative and clinical leadership position within the Medicine Healthcare Group (HCG), overseeing a broad range of subspecialty services such as Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Hospital Medicine, Pulmonary/Critical Care, and more. The role includes direct patient care in the physician's specialty area, collaboration with Section Chiefs and a second Deputy Chief, and close partnership with nursing and administrative leaders at the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center in Long Beach.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership and oversight for Medicine Service clinical operations, helping ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient care across inpatient, outpatient specialty, and procedural settings.

• Assist with recruitment and onboarding of personnel, position management requests, compliance with applicable regulations, and resolution of patient complaints, while supporting credentialing, privileging, FPPE/OPPE, and peer-review processes.

• Participate in and help lead Medicine Service, facility, VISN, and national committees, including systems redesign and quality improvement projects focused on access, quality, safety, and patient and staff experience.

• Provide direct patient care in your clinical specialty (approximately 40% of effort), maintain excellence in documentation and clinical practice, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in managing complex Veteran patients.

• Supervise and teach trainees-students, residents, and fellows-through bedside teaching and formal educational activities such as conferences and Grand Rounds, modeling professional behavior and sound administrative practices.

• Mentor junior faculty and fellows on scholarly and quality-improvement projects, and support the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and guidelines that promote comprehensive, coordinated, patient-centered care.

Compensation

• Competitive starting annual salary at the VM-15 level, commensurate with credentials and experience.

• Employees are eligible to receive performance-based pay annually, subject to VA policy and total compensation caps.

• Employees may also qualify for Proficiency Awards, which are available in addition to Pay for Performance incentives.

• Regular salary reviews occur every two years, with annual cost-of-living adjustments.

Schedule and call
Work schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (full-time on-site at VA Long Beach), or other tour of duty as agreed upon with the Chief of Medicine.
Call responsibilities will be aligned with the physician's clinical specialty and Medicine Service needs; specific call expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

Academic affiliation
This position includes substantial educational responsibilities within VA Long Beach's academic environment and its university partners.
Opportunities exist to teach, mentor, and supervise trainees in both inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, and to pursue or maintain an academic appointment with affiliated institutions, subject to qualifications and institutional approval.

Basic qualifications

• Must be US citizen

• M.D. or D.O. from an accredited medical school (or ECFMG certification for international graduates).

• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States.

• Completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited residency in Internal Medicine or an appropriate specialty, with board certification.

• Demonstrated experience and high competence in clinical medicine, plus experience in medical administration and a strong interest in leadership roles.
