About SubsenseSubsense is a deep-tech company developing the world's first non-surgical, bidirectional brain-computer interface powered by plasmonic and magnetoelectric nanoparticles. Our mission is to unlock direct communication between the human brain and AI - starting with medical applications such as stroke recovery and moving toward cognitive enhancement for healthy users. Headquartered in Palo Alto, Subsense brings together leading scientists and engineers to redefine the future of human-machine interaction.
The OpportunityWe're seeking a Research Scientist with strong expertise in neuroscience laboratory work, both in vitro and in vivo. This role offers a unique opportunity to integrate advanced materials science, neurobiology, and bioengineering in a collaborative environment that bridges academia and industry. You will help shape the next generation of neural interfaces, from concept to preclinical validation.
If you are driven by curiosity, thrive in fast-paced settings, and want to help redefine what's possible in neurotechnology, we'd love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities- Design, build, and test custom neurotech instruments and experimental rigs.
- Iterate rapidly on prototype designs based on experimental feedback; document builds for reproducibility and eventual IP filings.
- Design and conduct in vitro and in vivo neuroscience experiments in collaboration with the Neuroscience Lead and academic partners.
- Lead stereotaxic surgical procedures in mice, including injections, implantations, and recovery, with a high standard of precision and animal welfare.
- Perform and coordinate preclinical studies, including small-animal experiments in internal labs and at CRO sites.
- Manage and develop tissue culture facilities.
- Work within a cross-functional team (neuroscience, materials, hardware, software) to test novel BCI technology.
- Perform biocompatibility experiments, as well as live fluorescence and electrophysiology research on live tissue.
- Contribute to regulatory planning and documentation supporting upcoming clinical trials.
- Operate, maintain, and expand our state-of-the-art neurotech laboratories in Palo Alto.
- Develop experimental protocols, maintain data integrity, and contribute to publications and IP filings.
What You'll Bring- Direct, hands-on experience with stereotaxic surgery in mice, including injections, implantations, and post-op care.
- Proven experience with in vivo neuroscience models, including animal handling and behavioral assays.
- Strong background in neurobiology, electrophysiology, or biomedical sciences
- Proven hands-on experience with both in vitro and in vivo neuroscience models.
- Skilled in histology, microscopy (e.g. confocal, super-resolution, or electron microscopy), and related imaging techniques.
- Experience with tissue culture, including primary neurons and immortalized lines.
- Familiarity with neuro-inflammation or neuro-degeneration assays is advantageous.
- Comfortable in a dynamic, high-risk/high-reward startup environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and with academic or CRO partners.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in neuroscience, molecular biology, bioengineering, or a related field; 0-2 years of post-graduate academic or industry experience.
- Location: Palo Alto, CA
