Position Summary and Key Responsibilities
McKendree University seeks a Cybersecurity Coach and Adjunct Instructor to support the Cyber Defense program within the School of Business. The successful candidate will:
  • Serve as the faculty coach for the university's Capture the Flag (CTF) and other cybersecurity competition teams.
  • Provide mentoring, training, and coordination for student participation in regional and national cybersecurity competitions.
  • Assist in the design, setup, and maintenance of a cybersecurity practice and testing range, including virtualized environments for teaching and competition preparation.
  • Collaborate with faculty and IT staff to ensure range security, reliability, and instructional integration.
  • Ideally, teach undergraduate courses in Computer Science and Cyber Defense, such as Network Security, Ethical Hacking, or Digital Forensics.

This position requires a passion for student mentorship, hands-on cybersecurity practice, and applied learning that bridges theory with real-world defense techniques.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals, tools, and competition formats (e.g., NCL, NECCDC, CCDC, CTFtime).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • College-level teaching or coaching experience.
  • Industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CEH, CISSP, Network+, or equivalent.
  • Experience in managing cybersecurity labs, virtual machines, or practice ranges.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor students and promote team collaboration.

Work Conditions
Regular pay rate: $2,145.00 for each 3-hour course, per semester. Higher rates may apply for larger course enrollments, labs, or other duties.
Online/remote teaching opportunities may exist dependent on the needs of the course. Applicants interested in online/remote opportunities must reside in the following states: IL, CA, FL, TN, KY.
