Job description

The Graphics department at The New York Times is looking to hire an experienced engineer to build interactive applications, infrastructure, and tools that power our visual journalism. Our most ambitious data-driven projects rely on bespoke systems to publish multimedia stories to our readers at scale. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will architect, build, and maintain the cloud infrastructure that powers those stories.

You have demonstrated experience creating visually-compelling interactive experiences, and have expertise creating tooling and systems to build web-based features. Here are some examples of the types of projects you might help build or power with the tools you create:

  • The New York Times 2024 Election Results
  • The Needle: Live 2024 Presidential Election Forecast
  • President Trump's Approval Ratings: Latest Polls
  • Track Covid-19 in the U.S.
  • What It Was Like Inside Syria's Most Fearsome Prison
  • The Complex Deportation Network Behind Trump's Immigration Crackdown

The Graphics department is a group of journalists and visual thinkers with creative backgrounds ranging from architecture to cartography to computer science. We are curious about all kinds of things and seek to find individuals who bring their own curiosity to bear in creative approaches to storytelling.

Applications should include links to a portfolio or code repositories to demonstrate the creation of interactive applications and web sites from concept to launch. Please include a cover letter describing your role in specific projects, with details about software tools and systems you have created.

This is an in-office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain software used by graphics developers to render and publish visual journalism.
  • Build and improve pipelines for ingesting, processing, and displaying large data sets like national election results and statistical models.
  • Facilitate and guide contributions from other developers to our core software libraries.
  • Maintain automatic cloud tooling to support high-frequency publishing, data ingestion and data analysis.
  • Sketch and quickly build prototypes of interactive applications, graphics and other types of multimedia story forms.
  • Ensure compliance with web performance and accessibility standards.
  • Collaborate on news deadlines with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Director of Interactive Platforms

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Expertise in development of interactive graphics, data dashboards and Web sites, including HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Expertise in building software and tooling for the development and publication of web sites and interactive applications
  • Demonstrated experience working with Svelte or other modern web technologies
  • Expertise in managing applications in complex cloud computing environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience meeting deadlines and adapting to change in a daily, unpredictable news production environment
  • Skill in interface design and information graphic design
  • Curiosity and interest in the news, and in finding innovative approaches to telling stories
  • Experience creating news graphics in a variety of formats and timeframes
This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
