How much do traffic signal design jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for traffic signal design in Texas is $56,327.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $41,500.00 and $67,100.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is traffic signal design?

Traffic signal design is the process of planning, engineering, and implementing the layout and operation of traffic signals at intersections or other critical locations to ensure safe and efficient movement of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. This involves determining the placement of signal heads, timing of signal phases, and selecting appropriate equipment based on traffic volumes, roadway geometry, and safety considerations. Traffic signal designers use traffic studies, engineering standards, and specialized software to optimize signal performance and minimize delays. Their work is essential for reducing congestion, preventing accidents, and improving overall transportation system efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in traffic signal design roles?

Professionals in traffic signal design often encounter challenges such as balancing safety, efficiency, and budget constraints while creating signal plans that accommodate all road users. Coordinating with city planners, engineers, and utility companies to ensure compatibility with existing infrastructure can be complex and time-consuming. Additionally, keeping up with evolving technologies, such as adaptive signal control and smart traffic systems, requires ongoing learning and adaptation. These challenges make strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills essential for success in the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a traffic signal design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Traffic Signal Design Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or transportation engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and, ideally, a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Synchro, and MUTCD standards is essential, as well as knowledge of traffic control devices and signal timing systems. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in collaborating with stakeholders and delivering safe, efficient designs. These competencies are crucial for ensuring compliance, safety, and optimal traffic flow in complex roadway environments.

What is the difference between Traffic Signal Design vs Traffic Signal Maintenance?

AspectTraffic Signal DesignTraffic Signal Maintenance
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in traffic engineeringTechnical certifications, electrical or electronics training
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, field surveys, planning sessionsFieldwork, repair shops, on-site troubleshooting
Employer & IndustryTransportation agencies, engineering firmsMunicipalities, transportation departments

Job description

Civil Engineer (Drainage)

Company Name: Amani Engineering
Location: Houston, TX (On-Site)
Project Focus: Municipal Infrastructure (Drainage)
Work Setting: Integrated Engineering & Surveying Studio
Salary: $70,000 โ€“ $95,000 + Benefits + PTO
Recruited Exclusively By: Luxus | AEC Talent Partners

Position Overview

This is not a โ€œsit behind Civil 3D and redline plansโ€ kind of role. This is where early-career engineers level upโ€”fast. Youโ€™ll step into real ownership of municipal infrastructure projects, getting hands-on with everything from hydraulic modeling to construction coordination. If youโ€™re ready to stop being the extra set of hands and start being the person people rely on, this is your lane.

What sets this opportunity apart is exposureโ€”real, cross-functional exposure. Instead of being boxed into one discipline, youโ€™ll work alongside in-house survey crews and SUE teams, gaining a full-picture understanding of how projects actually come together in the field. Itโ€™s the kind of environment that accelerates your path to PE licensure and builds the foundation to lead projects, not just contribute to them.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and analysis of water distribution, wastewater collection, roadway paving, and stormwater drainage systems for municipal infrastructure projects
  • Perform hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, preparing detailed engineering reports and technical calculations
  • Develop plan and profile drawings and full construction document sets using Civil 3D and MicroStation
  • Support traffic signal design and analysis, including signal pole relocation and utility conflict coordination
  • Collaborate directly with survey crews to interpret topographic data and support SUE and construction observation efforts
  • Ensure all deliverables meet DOT standards and local municipal requirements (City of Houston, Sugar Land, Pearland, etc.)
  • Manage assigned design tasks with a focus on accuracy, quality control, and on-time delivery
  • Contribute to a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment where engineering and field execution align

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Experience:ย 5+ years of civil engineering design experience, focused on municipal or infrastructure projects
  • Licensure:ย PE licensure in Texas
  • Software: Proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D
  • Technical Foundation: Working knowledge of water, wastewater, roadway, and drainage design principles
  • Communication: Strong analytical thinking and ability to work within a team-driven environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in MicroStation
  • Exposure to traffic signal design or transportation engineering
  • Experience with Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) coordination
  • Familiarity with local standards in Harris, Fort Bend, or Brazoria County
