What is the difference between Traffic Safety Engineer vs Transportation Planner?

AspectTraffic Safety EngineerTransportation Planner
Required CredentialsBachelor's in engineering, certifications in traffic safetyBachelor's in urban planning or related field, certifications in transportation planning
Work EnvironmentDesigning safety measures, analyzing accident data, field inspectionsDeveloping transportation projects, analyzing mobility patterns, policy planning
Employer & IndustryGovernment agencies, traffic safety organizationsMunicipalities, urban planning firms, transportation departments

Traffic Safety Engineers focus on designing and implementing safety measures to reduce accidents, while Transportation Planners develop comprehensive transportation systems and policies. Both roles often collaborate but serve different primary functions within the transportation industry.

What are Traffic Safety Engineers?

Traffic Safety Engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and implement measures to improve the safety and efficiency of transportation systems. They work on roadways, intersections, and other transportation infrastructure, using data and engineering principles to reduce accidents and enhance traffic flow. Their responsibilities include conducting safety studies, recommending improvements, and collaborating with government agencies to ensure roads are safe for all users.

What are some common challenges faced by Traffic Safety Engineers when implementing new safety measures in urban environments?

Traffic Safety Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing the needs of different road users (drivers, cyclists, pedestrians), addressing budget constraints, and navigating regulatory approvals when implementing new safety measures. Urban environments can present additional complexities due to high traffic volumes, limited space, and the need for coordination with multiple city departments and stakeholders. Successful engineers frequently engage in data analysis, public outreach, and iterative design processes to ensure safety improvements are both effective and publicly accepted.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Traffic Safety Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Traffic Safety Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering, traffic analysis, and safety regulations, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with traffic modeling software such as Synchro or VISSIM, and knowledge of MUTCD standards and AutoCAD, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help in collaborating with stakeholders and presenting safety solutions effectively. These skills are vital for designing safe roadways and traffic systems that minimize accidents and enhance public safety.

A career in transportation is more than bridges, roads, and rail. As we plan, design, and manage projects that move people and goods from Point A to Point B, we create connections that transform our communities. Every airport, road, bridge, port, or transit project is an opportunity to make communities safer, cleaner, and more resilient. Together, we're making an impact around the world.
If you're looking for a career that moves, join our team of professionals who are passionate about the future of transportation.

  • Interact directly with state and local government clients and review agencies at project meetings and ensure that all client project designs satisfy engineering standards and exceed client expectations.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams on tasks such as regional transportation planning studies, Project Development & Environment (PD&E) studies, traffic calming studies, traffic impact studies, road safety audits, transit station facility design, surface/garage parking lot design, transportation management plans, intersection design, signal design, roadway design, signing and pavement marking plans, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSM&O), site plan design, construction staging plans, and traffic and signal operation analysis.
  • Prepare written technical reports to document the results of engineering/planning studies and surveys, including Traffic Impact Statements.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key traffic engineering clients and review agencies both through project involvement and professional organization involvement, such as ITE events.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, or related field.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Florida, or able to receive reciprocity within 3 months.
  • As an alternative to engineering licensure, may be certified as a planner (AICP) by the American Planning Association.
  • 5+ years of relevant traffic engineering/planning experience.
