RK&K is hiring a Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Traffic team in Richmond for the summer of 2027. As an intern in our Traffic Department at RK&K, you will receive on-the-job training, work alongside, and collaborate closely with one of the largest, most talented groups of traffic engineers and transportation professionals in the industry.
This internship is for Civil Engineering Students in the Transportation discipline. In this role, interns will gain insight into various aspects of traffic engineering including design, analysis, and safety. Traffic Engineering Interns will be exposed to various challenges, projects, and technologies related to traffic operations, safety, and design, and will complete tasks both in the office and in the field as needed.
Basic Functions:
  • Provide traffic engineering support for projects ranging from small scale studies and design for isolated intersections to complex solutions for Complete Streets corridors and major highway systems.
  • Assist with the preparation of design plans for traffic control devices including traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, temporary traffic control/work zones, lighting, design of bicycle and pedestrian facilities, toll systems, traffic calming, and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS).
  • Perform field investigations, collect and compile traffic data, evaluate traffic safety and operational conditions for all road users, and develop recommendations for improvements.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering with an interest in transportation or traffic engineering
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Skills and Qualifications
  • Classwork in traffic engineering
  • Participation in professional societies (ASCE, ITE)
  • Applicable prior internship experience
  • Working knowledge of MicroStation/AutoCAD, GIS, Synchro, Vissim, HCS
  • Exposure to traffic engineering references (MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, AASHTO guidelines)
