What does a trading strategy developer do?

A Trading Strategy Developer designs, tests, and implements algorithms or systems that facilitate automated trading in financial markets. They analyze market data, identify trading opportunities, and use programming languages to create models that can execute trades based on predefined rules. Their work involves backtesting strategies to ensure efficiency and robustness before deploying them in live markets, and they often collaborate with quantitative analysts and other finance professionals to optimize trading performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trading strategy developer?

To thrive as a Trading Strategy Developer, you need a solid background in quantitative analysis, financial markets, and programming—often supported by a degree in math, finance, computer science, or engineering. Expertise with programming languages such as Python, C++, and platforms like MATLAB, as well as familiarity with trading systems and backtesting frameworks, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively set top performers apart. These abilities are crucial for designing robust, profitable strategies that perform reliably in dynamic and competitive trading environments.

What are some common challenges faced by trading strategy developers when implementing new algorithms in live markets?

Trading Strategy Developers often encounter challenges such as managing slippage, latency, and unexpected market conditions when deploying new algorithms. Backtested strategies may not always perform as expected in live environments due to differences in data quality, execution speed, and market microstructure. Close collaboration with quantitative researchers, software engineers, and risk managers is essential to monitor performance, make real-time adjustments, and ensure compliance with trading regulations. Addressing these challenges proactively is key to maintaining robust, profitable strategies.

Job description

Principal DevOps Engineer
Category: Project Management
Main location: United States, Virginia, Fairfax
Position ID:J0726-0567
Employment Type: Full Time
Position Description:
CGI is seeking a Principal DevOps Engineer to lead the transformation of our enterprise build and release platform supporting CGI Advantage. Advantage Cloud Operations runs a build pipeline that takes a long time end to end. The Principal DevOps Engineer will own the full transformation: analyze the current pipeline, map every dependency, redesign the build architecture for speed and resilience, and deliver automated rollback. This is a hands-on engineering role with direct impact on release safety and customer outcomes.
Location: This role can be performed from any of the US CGI office. Candidates should follow a hybrid schedule of 2-3 days onsite per week.
Your future duties and responsibilities:
What You Will Own
. Audit the current pipeline - instrument every stage, identify bottlenecks, and produce a dependency map
. Redesign the pipeline architecture - parallelization, incremental builds, caching, artifact promotion, and environment reproducibility
. Deliver automated rollback - every promotion gate must be reversible without manual intervention
. Build resilience into the pipeline - flaky test isolation, retry policies, circuit breakers on external dependencies, and alerting when pipeline health degrades.
. Establish quality gates (unit, smoke, security scan, policy check) that block unsafe promotions without adding latency to the happy path.
. Document and hand off - every pattern, module, and decision is code reviewed, tested, and transferable to the wider team.
Required qualifications to be successful in this role:
What We Are Looking For
. 10 + years in software engineering , DevOps, SRE, or Platform Engineering -you have rebuilt a slow, fragile pipeline before and can show the outcome.
. Deep hands-on expertise in GitHub Actions (or equivalent); you write pipelines as production code, not YAML copy paste.
. Strong grasp of dependency analysis - build graphs, artifact registries, incremental compilation, and test impact analysis.
. Proven experience designing automated rollback and blue green or canary promotion strategies in a multi tenant environment.
. Comfortable with Terraform, Kubernetes (AKS), and policy as code - you can trace a change from Git commit to running workload.
. Communicates trade offs clearly to both engineering teams and leadership; writes the design doc before writing the code.
Success Criteria
. Pipeline build time reduced to under 2 hours (incremental/ 4hrs full build) within six months.
. Automated rollback demonstrated and tested for all Advantage release tracks.
. Dependency map and build architecture documented and peer reviewed within 60 days.
. Zero manual steps required to promote or roll back a release by end of program
CGI anticipates accepting applications through August 30, 2026.
