This recruitment will be used to underfill the Highway Equipment Mechanic 1.
Highway Equipment Mechanics diagnose, maintain, modifies, and repairs NDOT equipment and is responsible to keep equipment in the sub district's equipment fleet including a variety of light, medium and heavy equipment in good repair for routine maintenance and emergency response. Repairs include but are not limited to engine repair or replacement, repairing and rebuilding brake systems, steering and suspension system components, servicing of automatic and manual transmissions, electrical and wiring systems. Incumbent is responsible to restore systems throughout the fleet.
Incumbent will not only repair and maintain but also fabricate and install parts and components. The Highway Equipment Mechanic I keeps the fleet in a safe operating state enabling safer operations for NDOT crews. Special note-The Skilled Trades Apprentice position requires that incumbents spend four years in this position during which they receive specialized training, and progression to the next level in the series may only occur upon completion of training and with the recommendation of the appointing authority.
Failure to complete the training within the specified time frame will result in termination from the program unless there are extenuating circumstances which will be reviewed by the appointing authority. Skilled Trades Apprentices receive training and complete a variety of assignments directly related to a job title in the skilled trades. Essential Qualifications No experience or education required. Job Duties Receive on-the-job training in both a classroom setting and in practical field exercises.
Participate in classes, complete coursework and assignments, and take written examinations. Service, repair, and maintain assigned trades equipment. Serve as an assistant to the skilled trades staff and complete instructional assignments.
Perform duties applicable to the occupation. Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: Proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling; operation of computer equipment for entering, retrieving, and accessing information; mathematical computation.
Relevant tools and equipment; applicable health and safety regulations; manual labor. Skill in: Interpersonal and communication, both verbal and written. Use and operation of office and job-related equipment and software.
Ability to: Read, understand, implement, and explain federal and State laws, regulations, and agency policies and procedures; read and understand equipment manuals, applicable codes, blueprints, and diagrams; work cooperatively with others; follow verbal and written instructions. Evaluate information, problems, and goals; think clearly and rationally; diagnose situations correctly and act quickly; understand and follow verbal and written instructions and directions. Safely operate and maintain hand and power tools, materials, and equipment; perform work relevant to assigned trades.
