What is a trade sales manager?

A Trade Sales Manager is a professional responsible for managing and driving sales through business-to-business (B2B) channels, such as wholesalers, retailers, and distributors. They develop sales strategies, build relationships with trade partners, and ensure products are effectively promoted and sold in the marketplace. Their role often includes analyzing market trends, setting sales targets, and leading a team of sales representatives to achieve business goals.

How does a trade sales manager typically collaborate with other departments to achieve sales targets?

A Trade Sales Manager frequently works cross-functionally, liaising with marketing, supply chain, and product teams to align sales strategies with broader business goals. They often coordinate with logistics to ensure product availability and timely delivery, and partner with marketing to develop trade promotions and campaigns. Regular communication with the finance department is also common to monitor budgets and analyze sales performance. This collaborative environment ensures that sales targets are achievable and that the team can quickly adapt to market changes or customer needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trade sales manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trade Sales Manager, you need strong sales acumen, industry knowledge, and experience in B2B relationship management, often supported by a degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, sales analytics tools, and sometimes product-specific certifications are typically required. Exceptional negotiation, leadership, and communication skills help you build client trust and motivate sales teams. These abilities are crucial for driving revenue growth, maintaining key partnerships, and achieving organizational sales targets.

Job description

Trade Sales Consultant
Greater Detroit Metro Area
Pella is seeking a proven outside B2B sales hunter with experience in building materials or construction sales who knows how to grow a territory, influence specs, and win business at the job-site level.
If you've carried a bag, managed a territory, and built relationships with builders, contractors, and remodelers and you're motivated by uncapped commissions and performance, you'll feel right at home here.
The Role
As a Trade Sales Consultant, you'll operate as a territory business manager, responsible for driving new account acquisition and expanding share of wallet within existing customers. You'll work primarily in the field, calling on job sites and offices, influencing product selection early in the project lifecycle, and positioning Pella as the preferred window and door partner.
This is a quota-carrying, outside sales role with full ownership of results.
What You'll Do
  • Prospect aggressively within your territory by visiting job sites, builders, contractors, remodelers, and trade partners
  • Generate new business through networking, referrals, cold calls, and face-to-face selling
  • Grow and manage a book of business with clear focus on new account acquisition and revenue expansion
  • Influence product selection through consultative selling, specifications, and value-driven solutions
  • Represent Pella at builder events, trade shows, association meetings, and customer events
  • Partner with internal operations, service, and quoting teams to ensure smooth execution post-sale
  • Maintain accurate pipeline, activity tracking, and forecasting in CRM
  • Consistently achieve or exceed sales, profitability, and customer satisfaction targets

Who This Role Is For
You're a self-directed, field-based sales professional who prefers being in front of customers, not behind a desk. You understand how construction businesses operate and how purchasing decisions get made in the field.
Ideal Background
  • 2+ years of outside B2B sales or territory management experience
  • Experience selling building materials, construction products, or related solutions
  • Comfortable calling on job sites, contractor offices, and end users
  • Proven ability to open new accounts and develop long-term customer relationships
  • Strong negotiation, objection-handling, and closing skills
  • Ability to read blueprints, understand job specs, and discuss installation requirements
  • High level of independence, organization, and time management

What We Offer
  • Competitive base salary + uncapped commission
  • Guaranteed commission ramp for first 3 months
  • Mileage reimbursement
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, HSA & FSA options, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, tuition assistance, and more!
  • Home-based role with control over your schedule
  • Clear career growth paths within sales and leadership

Territory & Location
  • Must reside in SE Michigan Market/Greater Detroit or surrounding metro area
  • Territory-based role with primarily local travel
  • No relocation assistance provided

What Sets This Apart
  • Strong brand recognition and premium product offering
  • Sales support, operations backing, and internal expertise behind every deal
  • Balance of hunter activity + relationship-based growth
  • Long-term customer partnerships, not transactional selling
