Job description

ABOUT THIS POSITION
The City of Phoenix Human Services Department (HSD) enhances the health, wellness, and quality of life for Phoenix residents by providing a comprehensive array of services to help people meet emergency, short and long-term needs, and to help every individual reach their highest level of self-sufficiency. HSD offers a wide variety of programs for children, adults, and families at numerous locations throughout the city. There are three family services centers that provide emergency assistance and case management services to individuals and families in need.
The Human Services Department is seeking a Trades Helper to support maintenance and repair operations at multiple Senior and Family Services Centers across the City. The position performs skilled and semi-skilled work in maintenance, repair, alteration, and remodeling of buildings and facilities. Work may be performed independently, in crews, or by assisting journey, level staff.
Assignments include tasks across a variety of trades including:
  • Carpentry.
  • Plumbing.
  • Painting.
  • Roofing.
  • Masonry.
  • General building maintenance.
  • Work is routine and predictable with support available for more complex tasks.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • Ability to prep surfaces, repair drywall, patch and texture walls, and perform painting with quality finish.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, learn on the job, and maintain customer-service focus.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (50+ lbs), work at heights over 10 feet, and safely use chemicals and cleaning agents with PPE.
  • Comfort working outdoors in extreme temperatures, including Phoenix summers exceeding 100°F.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards along with electrical and fire safety best practices.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures, manuals, and reference materials.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety practices when working near wiring, outlets, or lighting components.
  • Strong customer-service mindset and ability to learn tasks through hands-on instruction.

SALARY
Pay Range: $19.93 - $ 30.92 per hour.
Hiring Range: $19.93 - $28.04 per hour.

  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 137. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.
  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.

  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two years of experience assisting a skilled trades person or performing manual work which involved the use of an acquired skill.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
    • Working irregular hours, second or third shift, weekends, holidays and evenings may be required.
    • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds will be required.
    • Working for prolonged periods standing in one location, and/or walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
  • This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Experience with/in
    • Repairing or replacing plumbing fixtures, clearing clogged drains, and performing plumbing-related maintenance.
    • Performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks across carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, flooring, and general building repair.
    • Preparing work-orders and building maintenance repair and janitorial experience.
    • Installing and maintaining signs, installing and maintaining crosswalks, stencils (i.e. bike markings, turn arrows), working with walk-behind airless striping machines, and traffic control experience.
    • Using an airless paint sprayer on the job.
    • Operating a forklift, front end loader, or other heavy equipment.
    • Performing painting work as a primary function of your job.
    • Using common hand tools such as hammers, saws, drills, screwdrivers, wrenches, ratchets, pliers, or similar tools.
  • Proficiency using ladders, working safely at heights over 10 feet, and following OSHA-compliant safety practices.
  • Proficiency using hand tools, power tools, ladders, and equipment such as snakes, paint sprayers, pallet jacks, and utility work trucks.
