Job description

Position Description Harris County Precinct 4 seeks a dedicated and reliable Facilities Assistant to support the daily operations of the Tracy Gee Community Center. In this role, you will help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for community members by performing routine facility cleaning, minor repairs, and basic landscaping tasks. You will play a key part in ensuring the building, equipment, and surrounding grounds remain in good working condition, supporting both staff and program participants.

This position is hands-on and highly active, requiring initiative, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The Facilities Assistant also supports overall center operations by assisting participants, setting up rooms for activities, and helping staff as needed. Evening and weekend work may be required depending on operational needs.

This position reports to the Community Center Manager. Duties and Responsibilities: Maintain daily cleanliness of the facility, including trash removal, dusting, window cleaning, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, and other custodial tasks. Clean and sanitize restrooms.

Perform basic repairs and light maintenance, such as replacing bulbs and air filters, unclogging drains, fixing minor leaks, replacing switches, caulking, minor door repairs, and light landscaping (watering, trimming, small-area mowing). Report major damage or building issues. Assist participants and groups using the center.

Set up and break down rooms for programs and events. Provide occasional front-office support, including answering phones. Secure the building after operating hours by locking doors and setting the alarm.

Perform other duties as assigned. Represents Precinct 4 with professionalism at all times, including assisting constituents and reinforcing center rules as necessary. This position is subject to a criminal history check. Only relevant convictions will be considered and, even when considered, may not automatically disqualify the candidate. Requirements Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED preferred, or 1-3 months of related experience.

Licensure: Valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to lift and move moderately heavy items (30-50 lbs.). Knowledge of proper ladder use, setup, and safety practices; ability to safely work from step-ladders when required

Basic computer skills, including email and digital forms. Knowledge of industrial cleaning equipment operation and maintenance. Basic understanding of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.

Ability to perform minor repairs and general facility maintenance. Knowledge of safety procedures, including chemical handling and hazard prevention. Ability to read and follow written instructions and safety guidelines.

Ability to interact professionally with visitors, staff, and vendors. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Preferences Experience working in a community center, school, recreation facility, or similar environment. Customer service experience in a public-facing setting. Familiarity with event setup needs such as tables, chairs, and A/V equipment.

Experience using work-order or reporting systems. Knowledge of safety protocols related to facility operations. Positive, proactive approach to supporting facility operations.

Bilingual capabilities (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
