Definition of Classification:

Under the supervision of the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach is responsible for furthering the mission of the University, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Bulldog Track & Field program. The Assistant Coach must comply with all University, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rules and policies. The full-time Assistant Coach will serve as the Operations Coordinator for the Track & Field and Cross-Country programs as well as support, as assigned, the head coach in the planning, administering, and evaluating of various aspects of the operations of those programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Identify and recruit qualified prospective student-athletes based on ongoing roster expectations determined by the Head Coach, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletic, and the Admissions Team.
•  Maintain effective and consistent communication with prospective student-athletes and Admissions Office.
• Arrange and conduct on- and off-campus visits with prospective student-athletes.
• Play a significant role in equipment management, purchasing, and upkeep for the track & field and cross-country teams.
• Oversee the plan development and implementation for travel, nutritious team meals, and organizational logistics for competitions.
• Coordinate set-up for practices and home meets.
• Support of operational systems that help maintain consistency across event groups and team functions.
• With collaboration from the head coach, oversee the throwers while maintaining professionalism, open communication, reliability, strong organizational skills, and cultural alignment.
• Function as an active team member of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics by attending all required staff meetings and completing mandatory trainings.
• A collateral departmental administrative assignment to be performed in support of programs and the Such assignment will be determined by the strengths, skills, and experience of the successful candidate.
• Performs other duties and special projects when assigned to support team, departmental, and/or University-wide needs.

Qualifications Guidelines

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

Experience/Training/Education:

Required

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
• Minimum of one year of Track & Field coaching experience.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit and attract high-achieving student-athletes.
• Clear understanding of NCAA Division III philosophy and the role of physical education, recreational sports, and athletics within a private, liberal arts academic setting.
• Valid California Class C driver’s license with a good driving record, or the ability to obtain one within ten (10) days of appointment in accordance with California Vehicle Code 12505(c).

Preferred

• Master’s degree from an accredited institution
• Experience coaching at the collegiate level, specifically as a throws coach.
• Knowledge of and commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive athletic environment.
• Proven ability to manage team operations, compliance, and administrative responsibilities in a higher education setting.

Knowledge and Skills:

• NCAA Division III rules, regulations, and compliance requirements
• Track & Field techniques, training methodologies, and event-specific strategies
• Effective recruiting strategies for attracting and retaining high-caliber student-athletes.
• Principles and practices of physical education instruction in a collegiate environment
• Best practices in student-athlete development, including academic and personal support
• Social media platforms and digital tools for recruiting outreach and promotion
• Safety protocols and risk management in athletic training and competition
• FERPA and Title IX policies as they relate to athletics and student engagement 
• Evaluating athletic talent and potential in high school student-athletes.
• Establishing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with student-athletes, colleagues, and admissions staff
• Organizing and executing recruitment activities, including campus visits and communications.
• Leading individual and group training sessions with clarity and motivation
• Communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing, across diverse audiences
• Managing multiple tasks, setting priorities, and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced athletic environment 
• Using technology for recruiting management, data tracking, and social media campaigns.
• Promoting inclusivity and fostering a positive team culture aligned with the values of a liberal arts institution

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a variety of settings, including outdoor athletic fields, gymnasiums, and occasionally in a standard office environment. The role requires exposure to varying weather conditions during practices and competitions. Travel is required for team events, recruiting, and professional development. Evening and weekend hours are common, especially during the competitive season.

Physical Demands:

The position requires frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, running, and demonstrating sport-specific movements. Must be able to lift and carry sports equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. The coach must be able to clearly communicate with student-athletes and staff in both loud outdoor environments and in office or meeting settings. Visual acuity is required to assess athletic performance and ensure safety. Occasional climbing, bending, or kneeling may be necessary when setting up equipment or facilities.
