What is a tower tech?

Tower Techs, short for Tower Technicians, are professionals who install, maintain, and repair telecommunications equipment on towers and other structures. Their primary responsibilities include climbing towers to work on antennas, cables, and other wireless communication devices, ensuring optimal signal strength and safety compliance. Tower Techs play a crucial role in ensuring that cellular networks, radio, and other wireless communication systems function correctly. The job often involves working at significant heights, traveling to various sites, and adhering to strict safety protocols. Strong technical skills and physical fitness are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tower tech?

To thrive as a Tower Tech, you need physical fitness, knowledge of telecommunications infrastructure, climbing certification, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with safety harnesses, RF monitors, hand tools, and sometimes certifications like OSHA 10 or NATE Climber/Rescue is typically required. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication help ensure both safety and efficiency on-site. These skills and qualities are crucial because the role demands precise technical work at heights, strict adherence to safety, and coordination with teams to maintain reliable communications networks.

What are some common safety challenges tower techs face, and how are they addressed on the job?

Tower Technicians frequently work at significant heights and in varying weather conditions, making safety a primary concern. Common challenges include fall risks, electrical hazards, and exposure to extreme weather. To address these, technicians receive comprehensive safety training, use personal protective equipment (PPE), and adhere to strict protocols such as buddy systems and regular equipment inspections. Employers often emphasize a culture of safety, and teams conduct daily safety briefings to mitigate risks and ensure everyone is prepared before climbing.

The roles often overlap in skills but differ in industry focus and specific tasks.

Do tower technicians get paid well?

Tower technicians typically earn competitive wages that vary by experience, location, and employer. Entry-level positions may start lower, but experienced tower techs with specialized skills and certifications can earn higher salaries, often supplemented by overtime and hazard pay due to the challenging work environment.

How hard is it to become a tower tech?

Becoming a tower tech typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent, physical fitness, and training in climbing, safety procedures, and equipment handling. Many employers provide on-the-job training, and obtaining certifications such as OSHA safety training can improve job prospects; experience with tools and working at heights is also beneficial.

What does a tower tech do?

A tower tech installs, maintains, and repairs telecommunications towers and equipment, such as antennas and transmitters. They often work at heights, use climbing gear, and require safety certifications and technical skills to ensure proper operation and safety standards.

This individual will work across ServiceNow’s global event portfolio, partnering with internal stakeholders, technology teams, agencies, and vendors to deliver scalable technology solutions and exceptional attendee experiences. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable developing strategy, navigating complex software environments, and rolling up their sleeves to drive execution.

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Event Technology Strategy & Execution: Drive technology strategy and execution across major programs within ServiceNow’s global event portfolio. Translate business and attendee requirements into scalable technology solutions and provide experienced leadership across complex, concurrent initiatives.

  • Platform & Integration Leadership: Serve as a subject matter expert across event technology platforms and their supporting ecosystem. Partner across technical and business teams to drive complex integrations, data flows, platform configuration, documentation, governance, and operational readiness.

  • Program & Operational Management: Lead complex technology workstreams from planning through onsite execution and post-event analysis. Develop project plans, manage timelines and dependencies, identify risks, solve problems, and establish repeatable processes that improve quality and scalability.

  • Agency, Vendor & Budget Management: Lead external agencies, technology providers, and professional services partners while managing budgets, forecasting, resource allocation, scope, and performance. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency while maintaining a high standard of delivery.

  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Build strong partnerships across Strategic Events, Marketing, Digital, IT, Sales, Finance, Sourcing, and other stakeholder groups. Bring clarity to complex requirements, influence decisions, and serve as a trusted event technology partner across the organization.

  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Stay current on emerging event technologies and industry best practices. Identify opportunities to improve attendee experiences, automate processes, strengthen platform capabilities, reduce operational risk, and scale programs more effectively.

Qualifications
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in event technology, event operations, experiential technology, or related disciplines, preferably supporting large-scale B2B events and global event portfolios.

  • Deep experience with enterprise event technology platforms, with a strong track record working with RainFocus, Swoogo, and Cvent Passkey. Experience with Jifflenow is a plus.

  • Significant experience working within complex software ecosystems and managing integrations between event platforms and enterprise technologies, including CRM, marketing automation, identity, data, mobile, APIs, and other SaaS platforms.

  • Proven ability to independently lead complex, high-profile event technology programs and multiple concurrent workstreams from strategy through execution.

  • Strong program management skills, including project planning, requirements gathering, timeline and dependency management, risk mitigation, documentation, and stakeholder communication.

  • Demonstrated experience managing substantial budgets, agencies, professional services engagements, SaaS vendors, forecasting, and resource allocation.

  • Strong technical aptitude with the ability to understand system architecture, data flows, integrations, dependencies, and platform limitations while translating technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.

  • Proven success operating within large, highly matrixed global organizations and influencing stakeholders across multiple functions and levels.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to bring clarity to ambiguous problems, build alignment, and drive decisions.

  • Ability to operate independently, manage changing priorities, and move comfortably between strategic planning and hands-on execution.

  • Experience within enterprise software, technology, or another complex global B2B organization preferred.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required (5+ events per calendar year minimum).
