How much do tow driver jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for tow driver in the United States is $22.95, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.79 and $24.28 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tow Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tow Driver, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of vehicle recovery and towing procedures. Familiarity with towing equipment, GPS navigation systems, and safety protocols is essential, and some roles may require specific certifications like WreckMaster. Strong customer service skills, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to remain calm under pressure help set top performers apart. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient vehicle recovery and positive interactions with customers in often stressful situations.

What are some common challenges a Tow Driver might face on the job, and how can they prepare for them?

Tow Drivers often encounter challenging situations such as responding to calls in adverse weather conditions, handling difficult or upset vehicle owners, and working in high-traffic areas. Preparation involves developing strong communication skills, maintaining a calm and professional demeanor, and staying vigilant about safety protocols. Being familiar with the local area and consistently checking vehicle and equipment readiness also helps Tow Drivers respond efficiently and safely to a variety of scenarios.

What are tow drivers?

Tow drivers, also known as tow truck operators, are professionals responsible for transporting disabled, illegally parked, or wrecked vehicles using a tow truck. Their duties include responding to calls for roadside assistance, safely securing vehicles, and transporting them to specified locations such as repair shops or impound lots. Tow drivers must possess good driving skills, knowledge of vehicle mechanics, and the ability to handle stressful situations, often working in all weather conditions and at various hours.

Can a truck driver make $200,000 a year?

Tow drivers typically do not earn $200,000 annually, as their wages are usually based on hourly rates, mileage, or load commissions, which generally result in lower annual incomes. High earnings for truck drivers are more common in specialized roles such as owner-operators with significant experience, high-volume routes, or long-haul driving, often requiring additional skills and certifications. Most tow drivers earn a median income well below that threshold, but earnings can vary based on location, experience, and the type of towing services provided.

What is the difference between Tow Driver vs Truck Driver?

AspectTow DriverTruck Driver
CredentialsDriver's license, sometimes special certifications for towingCommercial driver's license (CDL)
Work EnvironmentOn-road, roadside, towing vehicles or equipmentLong-distance or local freight transport
Employer & IndustryAuto repair shops, towing companies, roadside assistanceLogistics, freight, shipping companies

While both Tow Drivers and Truck Drivers operate vehicles on the road, Tow Drivers specialize in roadside assistance and vehicle recovery, often working in urban or roadside environments. Truck Drivers typically transport goods over longer distances, requiring a CDL. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and certifications.
