Job description

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for Amazon Leo Tooling, you will support the program on the transition from development into stable production. You will develop, design, analyze, and implement custom tooling and equipment required for assembling and testing the satellite. You will need to convert the requests from various teams into systems that are easy to use, cost effective, and accurate. In addition, you will be responsible for project management, cost estimate and scheduling.
This is a fast-paced, intellectually challenging position, and you'll work with leaders in multiple technology areas. You'll have relentlessly high standards for yourself and everyone you work with, and you'll be constantly looking for ways to improve your product's performance, quality and cost. We want individuals who are ready for this challenge and want to reach beyond what is possible today. Everyone on the team needs to be entrepreneurial, wear many hats and work in a highly collaborative environment. We will need to tackle problems that span a variety of domains.
Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Key job responsibilities
- Work with vehicle, manufacturing, integration and operation teams to define and conceive creative solutions to unique problems.
- Design fixtures, mechanisms, and other types of hardware to support safe, efficient, and reliable testing of satellite components.
- Utilize engineering fundamentals to validate the design including hand-calculations and Finite Element Analysis.
- Geometric design using 3D CAD (NX) for parts and assemblies and 2D engineering drawings to communicate design intent.
- Project manage execution of design including budgeting, scheduling and working with manufacturing teams and vendors.
- Work directly with manufacturing and operation teams on commissioning designs on production floor.

About the team
The Leo Tooling team is responsible for designing and commissioning the hard tooling, mechanisms, jigs, and integrated machines used for satellite production. This is a team of engineers and support technicians that provide in-house unique and creative solutions on tight timelines.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree or above in Mechanical Engineering
- 2+ years of project management, including resource planning, managing schedules, reporting project status and prioritizing tasks experience
- 4+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
- 3+ years of experience with CAD Design of complex systems including 3D modeling, drawings, and GD&T
- 1+ years of experience of structural analysis including hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
- Experience with the project management of technical projects
- Strong background in the design of mechanism, bolted and welded structures, assembly fixtures, alignment fixtures, test fixtures, rigging, and material handling
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals
- Design analysis experience with stiffness/strength, structural dynamics, weldments, and bolted structures.
- Experience designing tooling for aerospace hardware
- Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials used in assembly tooling
- Experience with NX 3D modeling and Simcenter 3D FEA simulation.

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
