What is the difference between Tool Steel vs Machinist?

AspectTool SteelMachinist
Primary RoleManufacturing and shaping tools and diesOperating and setting up machine tools to produce parts
Required SkillsMaterial knowledge, heat treatment, precisionMachine operation, measurement, technical skills
Work EnvironmentFactories, workshops, manufacturing plantsFactories, machine shops, production facilities
CertificationsOften none required, but technical training helpfulMachinist certifications or technical diplomas often preferred

Tool Steel and Machinist roles are closely related in manufacturing. Tool Steel refers to the material used to create durable tools, while Machinists operate and set up machines to shape various materials, including Tool Steel. Both roles are essential in manufacturing environments, with overlapping skills in technical knowledge and precision work.

This role is responsible for the repair and maintenance of precision molds, tooling, jigs, and fixtures used in injection molding and related manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machining and mold construction, with the ability to work closely with engineering and production teams to ensure high-quality, efficient manufacturing.
Requirements
  • Manufacture and modify precision molds, dies, jigs, fixtures, and tooling components using manual and CNC equipment, ensuring adherence to tight tolerances.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and CAD models to build and repair complex molding tools.
  • Set up and operate lathes, mills, grinders, and other machining equipment to produce high-precision components.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of injection molds and related tooling to minimize downtime and support production efficiency.
  • Inspect tooling components using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Collaborate with molding engineers, toolmakers, and production teams to optimize mold performance and product quality.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to mold design, tooling processes, and manufacturing methods to increase efficiency and reduce waste.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of tool builds, repairs, and modifications.

Required Qualification
  • High school diploma or GED required; completion of a formal tool & die apprenticeship or technical training program preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in tool and die making, with a focus on injection molding or similar processes.
  • Strong experience with manual and CNC machining equipment (lathes, mills, grinders, etc.).
  • Proficiency in using precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges).
  • Working knowledge of tooling materials such as tool steel and carbide.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and CAD designs.
  • Relevant machining or tool & die certifications are a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Advanced machining skills with the ability to build and repair complex molds and tooling to exact specifications.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities, particularly in mold performance and maintenance.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet production deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
