Tool & Die Maker - Direct Hire
Location: Sterling Heights, MI
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Shift: 2:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. OR 3:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m.
Shift Premium: $0.75/hour
Pay: $35.00-$39.00/hour, based on experience
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Tool & Die Maker for a direct-hire opportunity in Sterling Heights. This position is responsible for building, repairing, maintaining, and modifying dies, tooling, fixtures, gauges, and related equipment used in a production environment.
The ideal candidate will have at least five years of Tool & Die experience within a manufacturing or production setting. Candidates with strong new die build experience will also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, layouts, and specifications to determine machining and assembly requirements.
  • Plan the sequence of operations required to fabricate, repair, or modify dies and tooling.
  • Calculate and verify dimensions, tolerances, sizes, and specifications for parts and assemblies.
  • Set up and operate conventional and CNC machine tools, including lathes, mills, drill presses, grinders, and related equipment.
  • Machine, grind, file, shim, and adjust components to achieve proper fit and required tolerances.
  • Fit and assemble die components, gauges, fixtures, and tooling.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and modify production dies as needed.
  • Inspect completed dies and components for proper dimensions, surface finish, contour, and defects.
  • Measure, mark, and lay out metal stock using micrometers, rulers, scribes, protractors, and other precision measuring instruments.
  • Cut, shape, and trim material using saws, shears, machining equipment, and hand tools.
  • Design and fabricate jigs, fixtures, and templates used to support production and machining operations.
  • Assist with die changes, troubleshooting, and first-piece approvals.
  • Use forklifts and overhead cranes to move dies, tooling, and other heavy equipment.
  • Perform additional Tool & Die responsibilities as required.

Requirements
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 5 years of Tool & Die experience, preferably within a production/manufacturing environment.
  • Candidates with new die build experience will also be considered.
  • Experience with die repair, troubleshooting, and modification.
  • Journeyman card in Tool & Die Making or Machining preferred, but not required.
  • Deep draw die experience is a plus.
  • Welding experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand machining tolerances and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of mathematics and precision measuring equipment.
  • Experience safely operating machine tools, forklifts, and overhead cranes is preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for an 8+ hour shift.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
  • Ability to perform frequent and repetitive motions.
  • Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment with elevated noise levels.
