Server Job Description

Due to the fast-paced nature of Tomato Bar, servers are required to be very strong at multi-tasking and should own excellent organizational skills. While the position will naturally require those characteristics to be successful, our company really only has one primary requirement - be friendly and respectful to guests and to the team you're a part of. 

One critical difference between Tomato Bar and many other restaurants is that our front-of-the-house works as a team. You will be assigned guest tables as a server and those gratuities will be solely yours, but many of the tasks associated with making sure your guest tables have a great experience is absorbed as a team. At times, your tables will be prebussed and bussed as a team, orders will be ran as a team, and you will be responsible in contributing to the team in the same way. Our organization believes VERY STRONGLY that this type of teamwork creates a positive culture, strong friendships and a much more fun place to work. 

Server Responsibilities
  • Greets guests in a positive and friendly manner.
  • Provides guidance & information to assist the guest with food and beverage selections.
  • Presents ordered choices in a prompt and efficient manner.
  • Maintains dining atmosphere with an enthusiastic attitude.
  • Prepares dining room with condiments, rolling silverware, stocking plates, napkins, cups and folding carryout and takeout boxes.
  • Protects establishment and guests by adhering to sanitation, safety, and alcohol beverage control policies.
  • Helps guests select food and beverages with suggestions, explaining popular menu items, including beverages, and answering food preparation questions.
  • Enter orders to bar and kitchen with accuracy, including guests' special dietary needs and/or special requests.
  • Communicate effectively with kitchen team to make sure orders are delivered accurately and timely.
  • Serves orders by picking up and delivering guests' choices from bar and kitchen.
  • Responds to additional guest requirements by inquiring of needs and being educated of dietary allergies and sensitivities.
  • Maintains table setting by prebussing, replenishing utensils, refilling beverages, and being alert to spills or other special needs.
  • Obtains revenues by organizing checks, issuing checks, accepting payments, and returning change or credit card and signature slip to guests.
  • Concludes guest experience by being thankful for the visit.
  • Complete shift side work as assigned by management
Server Position Requirements
  • Indiana Alcohol Serving Permit
  • Previous experience in a restaurant preferred, but not required
  • Be consistently friendly when communicating with guests and team
  • Strong communicator in-person 
  • Ability to learn restaurant point-of-sale system
  • Highly organized with a strong ability to multi-task
  • Can function well in a fast-paced environment
  • Existing knowledge of food safety procedures preferred, but not required
