A Tomato Picking job involves harvesting ripe tomatoes from plants in fields or greenhouses. Workers typically pick tomatoes by hand, ensuring they are not damaged and meet quality standards. The job may also include sorting, packing, and preparing tomatoes for shipment. It often requires physical stamina, as it involves bending, lifting, and working outdoors for extended periods.
As a Tomato Picker, your day often starts early to take advantage of cooler morning temperatures and involves moving through fields or greenhouses to handpick ripe tomatoes according to specific quality standards. You'll use simple tools such as baskets or collection crates, and you may work independently or as part of a small team to meet daily quotas. The work is physically demanding and may require repetitive bending or standing for long periods, but teamwork and a well-organized process help make the day more efficient. Lunch and rest breaks are scheduled, and depending on the season, you may be asked to assist with sorting or packing as well. Working closely with supervisors and fellow pickers ensures that everyone helps maintain both pace and product quality.
To thrive as a Tomato Picker, you need good physical stamina, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify ripe tomatoes, with most employers requiring no formal education but valuing previous farm or harvest experience. Basic familiarity with harvesting tools such as picking baskets, gloves, and sometimes conveyor belts may be expected. Reliability, teamwork, and attention to detail are important soft skills for efficiently completing tasks and maintaining product quality. These abilities help maintain a steady workflow, ensure the quality of the harvest, and support overall farm productivity.

Tomato Bar is a premium pizza concept that began in Valparaiso, IN in 2013. Every part of Tomato Bar is designed and maintained with the utmost quality in mind, including each member of our team.
Tomato Bar is a fun and casual environment with a very positive culture. Our restaurants are a fast-paced environment, but having fun within a team environment is encouraged. As long as you can embrace the idea of being a contributing member of a team, you will build strong relationships at Tomato Bar, built on trust.
Tomato Bar offers health insurance for full-time team members and competitive pay. Qualities that we look for in candidates are friendliness, positivity, attention-to-detail, and the ability to work effectively within a team.
Tomato Bar offers the following benefits to team members:
Due to the fast-paced nature of Tomato Bar, servers are required to be very strong at multi-tasking and should own excellent organizational skills. While the position will naturally require those characteristics to be successful, our company really only has one primary requirement - be friendly and respectful to guests and to the team you're a part of.
One critical difference between Tomato Bar and many other restaurants is that our front-of-the-house works as a team. You will be assigned guest tables as a server and those gratuities will be solely yours, but many of the tasks associated with making sure your guest tables have a great experience is absorbed as a team. At times, your tables will be prebussed and bussed as a team, orders will be ran as a team, and you will be responsible in contributing to the team in the same way. Our organization believes VERY STRONGLY that this type of teamwork creates a positive culture, strong friendships and a much more fun place to work.
