Host Job Description

At Tomato Bar, the Host position can be a demanding one. There are (2) primary roles for a host at Tomato Bar - (1) to manage incoming and outgoing guests; and (2) to manage all takeout orders. During slower shifts, one host/hostess could be responsible for both of those roles. During busier shifts, these responsibilities are typically spread over multiple team members.

A Host/Hostess presents a positive first impression of the Tomato Bar's overall friendliness and service standards. The Host/Hostess warmly greets Guests upon arrival, inform Guests of their wait time, monitors a waiting list, enters Guest names into the system, show Guests to their table and warmly bids Guests farewell as they leave. The Host/Hostess is also tasked with assisting the team in bussing and sanitizing tables in order to quickly sit waiting guests.

The Host position is also responsible for managing all incoming and outgoing takeout orders, including accepting takeout orders over the phone. Hosts/Hostesses will need to be knowledgeable of the menu in order to accurately accept orders and communicate accepted orders back to the guests in order to minimize mistakes. The position is responsible for organizing all online and phone takeout orders and providing them to the guests upon arrival, accepting payment and warmly bidding farewell to takeout guests.

Host Team Responsibilities
  • Warmly greet guests upon arrival
  • Manage waitlist and server rotation
  • Bus, clean and sanitize tables as needed
  • Accept takeout orders over the phone
  • Manage takeout quote times during busier times of day
  • Manage and organize all takeout orders
  • Deliver and process takeout orders upon guest arrival
  • Follow all food health and safety requirements
  • Assist with the unloading of deliveries and their proper storage
  • Communicate to serving team in order to maximize guest service.
  • Interact with customers in a warm and friendly manner.
Host Position Requirements
  • Previous experience in a restaurant preferred, but not required
  • Be consistently friendly when communicating with people
  • Strong communicator in-person and over the phone
  • Ability to learn restaurant point-of-sale system
  • Highly organized with a strong ability to multi-task
  • Can function well in a fast-paced environment
  • Existing knowledge of food safety procedures preferred, but not required
