Job Summary

The Project Engineer will be responsible for supporting construction projects by having a thorough understanding of EPC project designs, material, equipment, and construction specification for substation projects (MV thru EHV). You will be accountable for supporting the field and being the main interface between the construction and the design engineering team(s). You will help ensure adherence to Ampirical’s designs and standards. Occasionally will be asked to review the work of peers, junior engineers and sub-contractors to ensure timely project execution and quality.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited university – Electrical Engineering (BSEE) preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience with a Professional Engineering (PE) License.
  • 9+ years of experience without a PE.
  • Proven track record in the utility industry with both design-only and Engineer, Procure, and Construct (EPC) projects and all aspects of Relay Protection and Control
  • Proven experience with complex engineering projects
  • High level of personal initiative and the ability to interact professionally with personnel, clients, and contractors

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) efforts for the company by being the main point of contact for questions during the estimating, construction and testing phases.
  • Supports relationships with alliance clients. Communicate effectively and confidently with clients, subcontractors, and internal groups. Respond to field and client inquiries timely.
  • Thorough understanding and experience in the detailed design and construction of utility substations (MV through EHV) primarily focused on protection and control systems including, but not limited to: one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, AC and DC station service systems, cable sizing/routing, instrument transformers, circuit breakers, power transformers, and autotransformers.
  • Full understanding of substation physical and electrical layouts, substation equipment specifications, general arrangement, grounding, and outdoor bus design.
  • Review RFP and help ensure that engineering estimates are complete and accurate. When applicable, review subcontractor estimates to ensure they are accurate and complete for their assigned tasks.
  • Conduct and support pre-construction design package review meetings with client and subcontractors.
  • Conducts project job walks as needed and ensures the engineering design packages are being executed properly during construction.
  • When needed helps develop project proposals, bid preparation, project schedules, bill of materials, etc. for assigned projects.
  • Able to perform quality reviews of engineering work for both internal assets/sub-contractors on assigned projects when necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly analyze technical issues and develop solutions that minimize impact to both project schedule and budget.
  • Support the team’s efforts in delivering quality work on time and budget.
  • Comfortable with presenting technical topics to small groups with varying levels of experience.
  • Ability to travel to meet with clients and conduct professional meetings (10%).
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage tasks for multiple projects under budget and time constraints.
