Timber Engineer information

What does a timber engineer do?

A Timber Engineer specializes in the design, analysis, and construction of structures using timber and wood-based materials. Their work involves ensuring the structural integrity, safety, and sustainability of timber buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They collaborate with architects, builders, and other engineers to select appropriate timber types, design load-bearing elements, and comply with building codes and environmental standards. Timber Engineers also focus on innovative uses of wood, such as engineered timber products, to meet modern construction needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a timber engineer?

Timber Engineers need a solid background in structural engineering, material science, and timber design principles, usually supported by a degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant certifications. Familiarity with CAD software, structural analysis programs, and industry codes like Eurocode 5 is essential for accurate design and compliance. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable timber structures that meet regulatory and client requirements.

How do timber engineers typically collaborate with architects and construction teams during a project?

Timber Engineers frequently work closely with architects to ensure that timber structures are both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound. They participate in project meetings to review design plans, suggest suitable timber materials, and address any structural concerns. Throughout the construction phase, Timber Engineers coordinate with builders and contractors to provide technical guidance, resolve on-site issues, and verify that the construction adheres to engineering specifications. Effective communication and teamwork are essential to balance design intent, safety, and cost-efficiency.

What is the difference between Timber Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectTimber EngineerStructural Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Civil or Structural Engineering, specialized in timber designBachelor's or higher in Civil or Structural Engineering, licensed in many regions
Work EnvironmentDesigning and analyzing timber structures, working with wood materialsDesigning various structures, including steel, concrete, and timber
Industry UsageConstruction, architecture, and timber manufacturing sectorsConstruction, infrastructure, and building sectors

Timber Engineers focus specifically on timber as a building material, specializing in designing and analyzing wood structures. Structural Engineers have a broader scope, working with multiple materials including steel, concrete, and timber. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but Timber Engineers have specialized expertise in wood, making them essential for timber-specific projects.

Job description

Structural Designer – Timber & Wood Framing

3D Structural Modeling | Revit / Cadwork | Fabrication & Construction

About the Role

DC Structures is looking for a Structural Designer to join our design and fabrication team.

This is not simply a drafting position.

Our Structural Designers virtually build our structures in 3D before they are fabricated and constructed in the field.

Working from architectural plans, structural engineering requirements, and project specifications, you will develop detailed 3D models of the complete structural framing system using Revit and/or Cadwork.

You will model and detail the structural components that make up our buildings—including wall framing, floor systems, roof systems, beams, posts, heavy timber, connections, openings, and other structural elements. Your work becomes the bridge between architecture, engineering, fabrication, and construction.

What You'll Do

Structural Modeling & Design

  • Develop detailed 3D structural models using Revit and/or Cadwork
  • Model complete wood-framed and heavy timber building systems
  • Develop framing layouts for walls, floors, roofs, beams, posts, and timber systems
  • Translate architectural drawings and structural engineering requirements into coordinated, buildable structural models
  • Determine how structural components come together and identify potential conflicts before they reach the field
  • Incorporate engineering requirements, details, connections, and revisions into the structural model
  • Coordinate architectural, structural, and fabrication requirements within the model
  • Review your work for accuracy, constructability, efficiency, and completeness

Construction Documents & Shop Drawings

Turn the structural model into the information our fabrication and construction teams need to build the project.

You will:

  • Produce detailed structural drawings
  • Develop framing plans and details
  • Create shop and fabrication drawings
  • Produce cut sheets and component drawings
  • Create detailed material and component takeoffs
  • Develop drawings for engineering and client review
  • Incorporate engineering and project revisions into final construction documents
  • Help create accurate information for prefabrication and field installation

Fabrication & Prefabrication

DC Structures prefabricates significant portions of our structural building packages before they arrive at the jobsite.

Our Structural Designers play a critical role in making that possible.

You will work closely with our fabrication and operations teams to ensure that what is modeled on the computer can be accurately fabricated, packaged, delivered, and assembled in the field.

This means thinking beyond what something looks like on a drawing and understanding:

Collaborate throughout the design and prefabrication process with:

  • Architects
  • Structural engineers
  • Project managers
  • Fabrication teams
  • Construction teams
  • General contractors
  • Clients
  • Vendors and suppliers

You will help identify and resolve design conflicts, constructability challenges, and missing information before they become problems during fabrication or construction.

The Type of Projects You'll Work On

DC Structures specializes in highly customized wood-framed and heavy timber buildings throughout the United States.

Projects include:

  • Luxury custom homes
  • Heavy timber residences
  • Barn homes
  • Equestrian facilities
  • Wedding and event venues
  • Wineries and tasting rooms
  • Commercial buildings
  • Mixed-use structures
  • Large custom timber structures

Many of our projects combine conventional wood framing with heavy timber, engineered wood products, complex roof systems, large spans, custom connections, and prefabricated components.

Every project is different.

What We're Looking For:

Experienced Structural / BIM Designer

You may already have experience with:

  • Revit
  • Cadwork
  • Tekla
  • AutoCAD
  • BIM modeling
  • Structural drafting
  • Wood framing design
  • Timber framing
  • Shop drawings
  • Fabrication modeling

Qualifications:

Strongly Preferred

  • Wood framing or heavy timber construction knowledge
  • Ability to read architectural and structural construction documents
  • Understanding of building sequencing and constructability
  • Experience with 3D modeling, CAD, BIM, drafting, or detailing
  • Experience with Revit and/or Cadwork
  • Experience producing construction documents, framing plans, or shop drawings

Additional Skills

  • Strong computer aptitude
  • Bluebeam proficiency
  • Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Strong mathematical and spatial reasoning
  • Ability to visualize complex structures in three dimensions
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Detail-oriented
  • Curious
  • Technically minded
  • Construction-minded
  • A strong problem solver
  • Self-motivated
  • Accountable
  • Comfortable asking questions
  • Able to communicate with both designers and builders
  • Interested in continuously improving systems and processes

From Design to Fabrication to Construction

Our Structural Designers are involved in a critical part of the DC Structures process:

Architecture → Structural Engineering → 3D Structural Modeling → Fabrication → Delivery → Construction

You will see the structures you model become real buildings.

That's what makes this position different from a traditional drafting role.

You're not simply documenting a building.

You're helping figure out how we're going to build it.

About DC Structures

DC Structures specializes in the design and delivery of custom wood-framed and heavy timber building packages throughout the United States.

We bring together architecture, structural design, engineering coordination, material procurement, prefabrication, and construction expertise to deliver highly customized structures.
