What does a timber engineer do?

A Timber Engineer specializes in the design, analysis, and construction of structures using timber and wood-based materials. Their work involves ensuring the structural integrity, safety, and sustainability of timber buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They collaborate with architects, builders, and other engineers to select appropriate timber types, design load-bearing elements, and comply with building codes and environmental standards. Timber Engineers also focus on innovative uses of wood, such as engineered timber products, to meet modern construction needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a timber engineer?

Timber Engineers need a solid background in structural engineering, material science, and timber design principles, usually supported by a degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant certifications. Familiarity with CAD software, structural analysis programs, and industry codes like Eurocode 5 is essential for accurate design and compliance. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable timber structures that meet regulatory and client requirements.

How do timber engineers typically collaborate with architects and construction teams during a project?

Timber Engineers frequently work closely with architects to ensure that timber structures are both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound. They participate in project meetings to review design plans, suggest suitable timber materials, and address any structural concerns. Throughout the construction phase, Timber Engineers coordinate with builders and contractors to provide technical guidance, resolve on-site issues, and verify that the construction adheres to engineering specifications. Effective communication and teamwork are essential to balance design intent, safety, and cost-efficiency.

About the Opportunity: A City-Defining Legacy with MML Hospitality

Tucked into Clarksville, one of Austin’s most adored historic neighborhoods, Sixth & Blanco is preparing to unveil a new standard for urban luxury. Launching in August 2027, this full-block masterpiece is the first and only mixed-use concept of its caliber in Texas.

Conceived and operated by Austin’s own MML Hospitality—renowned for creating some of the country’s most vibrant, design-forward boutique hotels and restaurants—and designed by the world-famous Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, Sixth & Blanco blends historic Texan vernacular with breathtaking modern sustainability.

As the General Manager, you will be the visionary leader of this monumental launch. Supported by MML’s deep home-office resources, you will own the pre-opening strategy, financial performance, brand delivery, and daily operations of a property destined to become an international landmark. This is a career-defining opportunity to pilot MML's ultimate flagship development right here in the heart of our home city.

The Property: An Urban Village of Unparalleled Luxury

Spanning an entire city block, Sixth & Blanco is structured as a lush, dense village made of mass timber, designed to seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor living. The property features:

  • The Boutique Hotel: A highly exclusive, 57-room luxury hotel floating in the tree canopy on the third floor, where each custom-furnished room features its own private porch and densely planted garden.

  • The Bathhouse & Wellness Spa: A spectacular, subterranean sanctuary carved into the native limestone, featuring a series of cascading indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and elite treatment rooms.

  • World-Class Culinary & Retail: An "urban carpet" on the first and second floors lined with highly curated specialty retail and MML’s newest premier restaurant and bar concepts, anchored by open-air courtyards and terraces.

  • The Residences & Club: Ten ultra-luxury, multi-million dollar private homes occupying the top floors, alongside an exclusive Members Club.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced, thoughtful, and highly engaged Hotel General Manager to lead the overall operations of Sixth & Blanco. This role requires a hands-on leader who can balance operational excellence, financial performance, guest experience, and team culture—while honoring the creative spirit of a truly unique Austin property.

The ideal candidate is both strategic and present: someone who leads with integrity, inspires teams, and understands that exceptional hospitality lives in the details.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage budgets, forecasts, and financial performance to meet or exceed revenue and profitability goals.
  • Monitor operating costs while maintaining quality, design integrity, and brand standards.
  • Partner with ownership and senior leadership on strategic initiatives, programming, and long-term growth.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including safety and labor laws.
  • Build strong relationships with vendors, brand partners, and the surrounding Austin community.

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience: Proven 10+ years of experience as a Hotel General Manager or in a senior leadership role within boutique or lifestyle hospitality.
  • Operational Depth: Strong knowledge across rooms, food & beverage, and multi-outlet environments.
  • Financial Acumen: Demonstrated success in budgeting, forecasting, and managing P&L.
  • Leadership: Exceptional communication and problem-solving skills with a track record of building high-performing teams.
  • Vision: A passion for design-forward, experience-driven hospitality.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality, Business, or a related field is preferred.

What MML Hospitality Offers

  • Competitive Salary + Bonus Potential
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, Disability, Life, and Pet Insurance
  • Paid Time Off and Parental Leave
  • 401(k) / Retirement Benefits
  • MML Property Discounts (Hotel, Restaurant, Retail)
  • Beverage Education Reimbursement
  • Advancement and Promotion Opportunities
  • Relocation Assistance

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the property for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands/fingers to handle tools or controls.
  • Vision requirements include close, distance, and color vision, as well as the ability to adjust focus.
