TRADES WORKER
The essential function of the position within the organization is to perform skilled work in the maintenance of facilities. The position is responsible for performing carpentry, electrical, HVAC and plumbing tasks in the maintenance, repair and construction of assigned facilities. The position works under direct supervision according to some procedures; decides how and when to complete tasks.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform maintenance and repairs of heating and air-conditioning units, including changing belts and filters, performing ductwork, repairing/replacing compressors, recovering Freon, and charging A/C systems.
  • Perform electrical repair and maintenance tasks, such as running and repairing electrical lines, replacing receptacles and conduits, and replacing bulbs and ballasts in fluorescent light fixtures.
    Perform carpentry tasks, such as framing, building cabinets and shelves, and repairing existing structures as needed.
  • Repair and/or replaces toilets, faucets, water lines, drain lines, sewage lines and floor drains, and installs water heaters.
  • Make repairs to roofs and gutters, skylights, and door canopies; hangs doors and frames, and repair doorknobs, locks, hinges, and door closers.
  • Perform painting tasks, including painting and priming walls, cabinets, ceilings, shelves and buildings.
  • Hang, repair, and install acoustical ceiling rails and tiles; repair and install drywalls and ceilings.
  • Assist with masonry projects, including laying brick and block, and pouring concrete roadways, sidewalks, building foundations, and loading docks.
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of departmental tools and equipment.
  • Perform clerical tasks, including preparing cost estimates on repair jobs and completing work orders and routine job forms.

QUALIFICATIONS
Four years of related experience. High School Diploma or GED and the equivalent of one year of specialized vocational training. HVAC Technician or Plumbing Certification preferred. Must have a valid state driver's license and meet minimum driving standards.
Knowledge of: Requiring minimum responsibility for only small quantities of low-cost items or supplies where opportunities for achieving economies or preventing loss are negligible. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; may compute ratios, rates, and percentages. Guiding others, requiring a few decisions, affecting the individual and a few co-workers; works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions but with some variations from the routine. Making decisions with very minor impact - affects only the individual.
Skill in: Handling or using machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
Ability to: Copy, transcribe, enter, or post data or information. Assist people to achieve task completion; may instruct or assign duties to coworkers. Read routine sentences or instructions; write routine sentences and complete routine work forms; speak routine sentences using standard grammar. Perform skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem solving; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure. The employee must be willing to work non-standard and overtime hours as required.
Working conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, bright and/or dim light, dust or pollen, intense noise levels, vibration, fumes or noxious odors. All required safety standards shall be adhered to mitigate risk from moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, heights, blood-borne pathogens, traffic, animals and wildlife, toxic or caustic chemicals, and other identified hazards.
Physical requirements
This position requires frequent standing, kneeling, bending and climbing. The employee must be able to use hands to operate and manipulate tools and equipment. This position requires very heavy physical exertion including the ability to lift over 50 pounds and exert over 100 pounds of force on a regular basis.
The employee must be willing to work non-standard and overtime hours as required.
The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and depth perception.
