Job description

Set-up operators for secondary operations are responsible for performing the operations of loading, installing, aligning, diagnosing, adjusting, operating and dismantling (re-setting) rivet, hardware insertion (staking), tapping and welding machines according to work instructions and specific set-up specifications and requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cleans, assembles, installs and aligns tools, fixtures and dies in appropriate equipment according to work instructions and specific set-up requirements. The Set-up operator is responsible to verify the accuracy of all set-ups as well as appropriate safeguarding and safety features. Responsible to verify all appropriate auxiliary equipment.
  • Sets up machines and stages appropriate subcomponents for the operation.
  • Sets and fills all applicable lube systems. Ensures the accuracy of the lubrication in use versus specifications.
  • Assists in set-up changes, as applicable.
  • Observes machine operation and performs limited dimensional inspection to detect defects or equipment malfunction. Supports Operators to ensure optimum performance. Provide training to Operators and others as needed.
  • Initiates trouble-shooting and resolves production performance problems. Assists Tool Makers and Quality Assurance personnel.
  • Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance duties. Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunctions and discusses machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problem and/or repair machine.
  • Performs first piece evaluation prior to formal submission to Quality Assurance.
  • Efficiently and correctly reports set up and labor data to maintain accurate and timely records.
  • Participates in the continuous improvement of the Secondary Operations department with suggestions for Quick Change, material and parts flow, safety suggestions, die sensing, etc.
  • Creates and documents set-up instructions for new and/or revised processes.
  • Must maintain and promote and clean and safe work center environment.
  • Actively participates in work center readiness audits and verifies the receipt and proper documentation of all required approvals in advance of beginning production job orders. Indicates the status of tooling per work instructions (red or green tag process).
  • Perform various other duties from time to time as required by the Secondary Supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 3 years maintenance or related experience. Vocational training or apprenticeship completion desired.
  • This is a hands-on position and requires strong mechanical abilities and problem solving skills sufficient to perform machine set-up activities, under conditions of tight deadlines. Requires the ability to organize and prioritize activities in order to achieve goals.
  • The job involves constant visual effort and concentration. The work requires standing and bending, and traveling throughout the plant. It also requires the ability to work and concentrate under conditions of loud noise and distractions. Lifting of 40 pounds is required, as well as the ability to grip and use hand tools.
  • Must have strong attention to detail and relentless toward safety. Must possess general knowledge of various types of metal fabrication & welding equipment.
  • The position requires the use of precision measuring instruments & the ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Must have basic knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) concepts, and ISO/TS16949 quality standards.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision and be held accountable for results.
  • Good math skills; ability to calculate and comprehend necessary math concepts.
  • Ability to complete required paperwork through basic reading and writing skills.
  • Must be a team player and able to work with production as well as management. Customer focus is mandatory.
  • Must be flexible and willing to adjust job schedule given customer and production schedule demands.
  • Must be proficient in the operation of industrial power lift trucks.
  • Must utilize and care for equipment as if it is owned by the employee.
  • Current plant hours are Monday - Thursday, 6am to 4:30pm.
