Job description

Thermal Engineer Spacecraft Thermal Systems

On-site in El Segundo, CA Target salary range: $102,000 - $182,500.00 We are hiring a Thermal Engineer to support spacecraft development programs, thermal system design, analysis, testing, and flight operations. This role supports spacecraft thermal engineering at the board, component, subsystem, and system levels using thermal analysis tools such as Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT, ANSYS, and Thermica, with opportunities to support Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) blanket design, fabrication, and installation. Working closely with program managers and systems engineering teams, the Thermal Engineer will develop thermal models, evaluate spacecraft temperature margins and thermal loads, support thermal verification testing, and help ensure passive and active thermal control systems maintain spacecraft components within operating and survival limits throughout the mission lifecycle.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform spacecraft thermal design and analysis at the board, component, subsystem, and system levels.
  • Develop spacecraft and system-level thermal models to predict thermal loads, environmental impacts, and temperature margins in support of spacecraft design.
  • Evaluate passive and active thermal control solutions to maintain spacecraft systems, subsystems, and components within required operating and survival temperature limits.
  • Present thermal design, modeling, and analysis results to program managers, customers, and sponsors.
  • Identify materials, processes, and facilities required to achieve qualified spacecraft thermal designs and operations.
  • Support spacecraft and component thermal verification testing, including test design, execution, data reduction, analysis, and reporting.
  • Develop and enhance engineering tools supporting conceptual thermal design and post-processing analysis.
  • Support proposal development and new business activities.
  • Cross-train with the Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) team to provide hands-on support for MLI blanket design, fabrication, and installation as needed.

Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required by Federal Law
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI Security Clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or another relevant field.
  • 2+ years of experience in the design, development, analysis, implementation, testing, and/or operation of spacecraft thermal systems or other complex thermal systems.
  • Proficiency with thermal analysis and modeling tools such as Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT, ANSYS, and/or Thermica.
  • Experience supporting thermal engineering activities such as thermal modeling, thermal loads analysis, temperature margin assessment, thermal control design, or thermal verification testing.
  • Ability to work 100% onsite at one of the designated location options.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active TS/SCI Security Clearance.
