How much do thermal oxidizer engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for thermal oxidizer engineer in the United States is $104,528.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $80,000.00 and $129,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a thermal oxidizer engineer do?

A Thermal Oxidizer Engineer is responsible for designing, operating, and maintaining thermal oxidizer systems, which are used to control air pollution by destroying hazardous gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial exhaust streams. They work to ensure these systems meet environmental regulations and operate efficiently, often troubleshooting issues and optimizing performance. Their work involves collaborating with environmental engineers, plant operators, and compliance officers to ensure safe and effective air emission control.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a thermal oxidizer engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Thermal Oxidizer Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or mechanical engineering, knowledge of combustion processes, and experience with environmental regulations, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), control systems (like PLCs), and industry certifications (e.g., PE license) is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure compliance, operational efficiency, and safety in industrial air pollution control systems.

What are some common challenges thermal oxidizer engineers face when optimizing system performance in industrial settings?

Thermal Oxidizer Engineers often encounter challenges related to balancing strict regulatory compliance with energy efficiency and operational cost constraints. They must frequently troubleshoot issues such as fluctuating waste stream compositions, maintaining consistent destruction efficiency, and minimizing system downtime. Collaboration with plant operators, maintenance teams, and environmental compliance staff is essential to ensure solutions are both technically sound and feasible in a fast-paced industrial environment. Staying updated on the latest emissions regulations and advancements in oxidation technology is also a key part of the role.

What is the difference between Thermal Oxidizer Engineer vs Air Pollution Control Engineer?

AspectThermal Oxidizer EngineerAir Pollution Control Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Chemical, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering; certifications like PE or AEEBachelor's in Environmental or Chemical Engineering; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilities, waste treatment plantsEnvironmental agencies, consulting firms, industrial sites
Industry UsageDesign, operation, and maintenance of thermal oxidizers for VOC and hazardous air pollutantsDeveloping and implementing air pollution control strategies, including thermal oxidizers

Thermal Oxidizer Engineers focus on designing and maintaining thermal oxidizers to control emissions, while Air Pollution Control Engineers have a broader role in developing strategies to reduce air pollutants, often including thermal oxidizers as part of their solutions.
