Job description

Thermal Lab Technician

Job Description:

Insight Global is seeking a Mechanical and Thermal Lab Technician to support a leading technology organization focused on next-generation server and data center hardware. This individual will work within a mechanical and thermal laboratory environment supporting thermal testing, prototype modifications, hardware validation, and data center infrastructure initiatives.

This person will partner with engineering teams to execute thermal and mechanical test plans, analyze results, validate new designs, and support the development of cutting-edge AI infrastructure and liquid cooling technologies.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on technician who enjoys building, troubleshooting, testing, and working directly with hardware. They possess strong mechanical aptitude, are curious and coachable, and thrive in fast-paced lab environments supporting cutting-edge AI and data center technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform thermal testing and thermal validation on server and data center hardware
  • Support mechanical and thermal lab operations focused on hardware performance and reliability testing
  • Receive, rack, cable, power-on, and support deployment of server and data center infrastructure equipment.
  • Assist with the setup, organization, and ongoing operation of a new mechanical and thermal testing laboratory.
  • Modify and fabricate prototype components using machine shop equipment
  • Operate CNC machines, drill presses, band saws, welding equipment, and 3D printers as needed
  • Assist engineering teams with hardware development, testing, and validation efforts
  • Support lab operations including equipment maintenance, calibration activities, inventory tracking, and safety compliance.
  • Deploy, install, and maintain data center hardware and infrastructure equipment
  • Document testing results and provide feedback to engineering teams throughout the validation process
  • Support day-to-day lab activities while adhering to safety and operational procedures

Must-Have Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience working in a mechanical, thermal, hardware, or data center lab environment
  • Experience supporting server hardware, server racks, data center equipment, or data center infrastructure
  • Hands-on experience performing thermal testing and/or thermal validation
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and a desire to work in a hands-on laboratory environment
  • Experience operating machine shop equipment such as CNC machines, drill presses, band saws, welding equipment, or 3D printers
  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds and safely handle server and laboratory equipment.

Nice-To-Haves:

  • Experience supporting server thermal testing programs
  • Experience working with liquid-cooled server environments, data center cooling systems, or thermal management infrastructure.
  • Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) experience
  • 5-10 years of relevant laboratory, hardware, or thermal testing experience
  • Mechanical Technology, Electronics Technology, or related Associate's Degree
  • Military technical experience, trade school training, or relevant technical certifications
  • Experience leading lab activities or mentoring junior technicians
  • Experience supporting new product introduction (NPI) or prototype development efforts
