Thermal Development Engineer information

What does a thermal development engineer do?

A Thermal Development Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and improving systems that manage heat within products or processes. They work on solutions to control temperature and thermal energy, which is critical in industries like automotive, aerospace, electronics, and manufacturing. Their tasks often involve using computer simulations, performing thermal testing, and collaborating with other engineers to ensure products operate safely and efficiently under various temperature conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a thermal development engineer?

To thrive as a Thermal Development Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or thermal engineering, strong analytical skills, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with simulation tools like ANSYS, CFD software, and thermal analysis methods, as well as experience with CAD systems, is highly valued. Effective problem-solving, project management abilities, and strong teamwork and communication skills help set candidates apart. These competencies enable engineers to design, analyze, and optimize thermal systems efficiently, ensuring product reliability and performance.

What are some common challenges faced by thermal development engineers in cross-functional project teams?

Thermal Development Engineers often work closely with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing teams to ensure thermal solutions meet product requirements. One common challenge is balancing thermal performance with design constraints such as limited space or strict weight requirements. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as thermal engineers must translate complex data into actionable insights for team members from different disciplines. Adapting to evolving project specifications and tight deadlines can also require strong problem-solving skills and flexibility.

What is the difference between Thermal Development Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a hardworking team of engineers, you will contribute to the definition and development of spacecraft thermal control systems. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced and often uncertain environment, contributing to innovative solutions, while demonstrating personal leadership, technical competence, and attention to detail. You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program.

We are looking for a thermal engineer to be responsible for the system level transient thermal analysis of lunar transport vehicles in ground, launch, Earth orbit, cis-lunar space, lunar orbit, and lunar surface environments using Thermal Desktop. Typical tasks include capturing system inputs, constructing and vetting analysis models, performing system level trade studies, generating temperature and heat transfer predictions, and documenting results.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Collect analysis inputs from stakeholders and responsible engineers
  • Develop new or modified thermal analysis models to represent vehicle configuration and behavior
  • Create analysis cases to evaluate vehicle thermal performance is worst case conditions
  • Check own work and correct errors independently
  • Post process analysis results to draw engineering conclusions from output data
  • Author and publish analysis reports in various mediums to support engineering decision making
  • Generate and present design review content to subsystem, vehicle and business unit partners and customers
  • Create work plans, document progress and report status to leads and managers

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 4-5 years of relevant Thermal Engineering/Analysis experience.
  • Solid understanding of thermal fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated thermal analysis skills.
  • Familiarity with modeling spacecraft thermal performance using Thermal Desktop and Sinda/Fluint.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 8 years of relevant aerospace experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise with modeling spacecraft thermal performance using Thermal Desktop and Sinda/Fluint.
  • Experience solving a variety of thermal problems demonstrating breadth in analysis application.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C/C++, FORTRAN, Matlab).
