Function
The Middle School Theatre Arts/Speech Sponsor/Teacher is under the direct supervision of the principal and under the guidance of the Curriculum Specialist for Art and Speech/Theatre. The Teacheris responsible for directing and coordinating the theatre arts/speech activities for the campus, participating in District-wide events, coaching academic competitions related to theatre arts/ speech, and assisting the Curriculum Specialist for Art and Speech/Theatre Arts in planning and conducting District-wide events.

Responsibilities:
Theatre Arts Sponsor:
  • Directs the One-Act Play for the District One-Act Play event.
  • Prepares students for competition in the District Middle School Speech Tournament.
  • Travels with students, and supervises students at District-wide competitions.
  • Directs at least three campus-based theatre arts/speech events a year: talent or variety show, school P TA program, school speech contest, Dessert Theatre, Dinner Theatre, Optimist Oratorical Contest, performances off-campus, campus One-Act Play, assemblies, and Children's Theatre/Reader's Theatre.
  • Prepares a minimum of 30 students to compete in individual events in competition, and motivates students to perform in public.
  • Maintains all records for Districtwide competitions/festivals, and complies with deadlines.
  • Prepares an annual inventory of the theatre arts lighting and audio equipment, UIL Unit Set assigned to the theatre arts department.
  • Attends all meetings held to plan Districtwide events for middle school students.
  • Maintains accurate records of expenses and is responsible for paying all bills, including royalty fees.
  • Maintains an accurate roster of academic competition results, and oversees accurate publication of competition results.
  • Oversees publicity of competition results.
  • Follows activities outlined in the attached Middle School Theatre/Arts Speech Director Schedule of Duties and Activities, and works with the principal to modify activities when appropriate.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the principal.

Teacher:
  • Plans for successful student learning of daily objectives that include basic knowledge and skills, and central concepts of the discipline.
  • Ensures students are engaged and successful in learning, critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Utilizes multiple models of instruction, assessment and effective teaching practices.
  • Utilizes State TEKS and District Curriculum to design engaging lessons which are challenging, high quality and appropriate for the level of instruction.
  • Maintains current accurate records of daily attendance and textbooks issued.
  • Able to effectively manage time and materials.
  • Accepts related assignments as requested by principals.
  • Instructs classes in the subject area(s) assigned.
  • Is responsible for the use and care of available instructional materials.
  • Maintains current records of student grades and progress.
  • Accurately evaluates and assesses performance of students in subject/s taught.
  • Confers regularly with parents on student progress.
  • Fulfills related responsibilities, e.g., reporting grades, exams, field trips, and programs.
  • Maintains classroom discipline that allows for student learning, safety and teaches individual responsibility.
  • Analyzes data and information from assessments and utilizes it for individualizing instruction.
  • Identifies students that are at-risk of failing the subject or grade.
  • Appropriately plans for remediation and intervention for students identified as at-risk.
  • Appropriately modifies and accommodates student's needs based on IEP goals and 504 accommodations.
  • Works cooperatively with the campus librarian in the selection of materials appropriate to the subject area.

MIDDLE SCHOOL THEATRE ARTS/SPEECH Schedule of Duties and Activities. In addition to those responsibilities outlined for the classroom teacher, there are certain additional job-embedded duties expected for the Middle School Theatre Arts/Speech Director. Participation in District competitions and festivals is expected. Participation is defined as (a) preparing students for competition; (b) entering students in competition; (c) traveling with and supervising students at and during competition; and (d) assisting with contest management or judging as assigned by the contest or festival chairperson.
The Schedule of Duties and Activities contains seasonal duties, outlined chronologically, that are subject to approval and modification by the campus principal.
July-August
  • Places all theatre and speech events on campus calendar.
  • Reserves stage for projected rehearsal and performance times.
  • Researches and reads one-act plays for festival.
  • Selects play for One-Act Play event, then orders play.
  • Cuts play for One-Act Play event.
  • Develops a time line for One-Act Play production.
  • Cuts readings for Prose Reading, and Dramatic and Humorous Interpretation.

August-September
  • Meets with other speech/theatre arts teachers to share campus calendars.
  • Cuts readings for Prose Reading, and Dramatic and Humorous Interpretations.
  • Times One-Act Play to determine if play is less than 40 minutes; makes additional cuts, if necessary.
  • Starts One-Act Play rehearsals.
  • Coordinates fund-raising activities.

September-October
  • Considers attendance of Texas Speech Communication Association Conference the first week of October.
  • Casts play, and selects crew.
  • Plans rehearsal schedule for play.
  • Secures permission from the principal to perform selected one-act play.
  • Submits entry form for the one-act play to the theatre arts consultant.
  • Makes prompt book for play.
  • Designs and makes costumes, sets, and scenery.
  • Selects lights and sound.

October-November
  • Submits program information for District One-Act Play event to theatre arts consultant.
  • Organizes props and scenery for play.
  • Conducts polishing and technical play rehearsals.
  • Orders programs and tickets for campus performances.
  • Performs play for campus audience.
