Duties and Responsibilities
  • In conjunction and cooperation with the Plant Manager, ensure that the operations of the facility comply with all requirements dictated by Company, city, county, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Prepare various operating permits on behalf of the Division and providing these permits to the Plant Manager, Division Manager, and Corporate to be reviewed before being filed.
  • Direct and guide plant staff using various methods of communication, such as staff meetings, e-mails, one-on-one discussions, etc, to meet performance goals established by Management.
  • Responsible for controlling costs for the plant by reviewing and understanding purchase orders, invoices and financial reports on a continual basis, comparing actual costs to budgeted costs, and making suggestions for ways to lower costs. Final decisions on cost cutting measures should be discussed with and approved by the Plant Manager and the Northwest Regional Manager.
  • Manage the required labor force. Responsible for understanding all of the different plant personnel job functions, reviewing timecards/plant sheets, vacation schedules, and schedule shift start and stop times and resolving any timekeeping discrepancies, evaluate employee performance, and develop/mentor employees in a manner that promotes cross-training and job advancement. This position is involved in and makes recommendations but does not perform employee terminations or hiring.
  • Under the guidance of the Plant Manager and Northwest Regional Manager, will assist in the interviewing and recommendation of new hire applicants and direct, guide, and instruct personnel in accordance with company policies to ensure the efficient operation of the facilities. This position also makes hiring, disciplinary and termination recommendations for plant personnel but not final decisions.
  • Ensure that all plant employees follow and adhere to all company policies and guidelines, including quality control, HAACP, APPI, FSMA, and safety regulations.
  • React to related production problems (such as weekly yield issues) by researching the cause and implementing remedies to such problems. Evaluate the production process and investigate major issues and ensure that corrective action is taken. Also keep the Plant Manager and Northwest Regional Manager informed on all significant actual and potential production problems, including personnel issues, equipment issues, raw material issues, etc.
  • Review and understand various reports, including plant production reports, yield reports, payroll reports, and monthly financial reports, and make recommendations to the Plant Manager and Northwest Regional Manager on ways to improve productivity and financial results. Also, correspond with accounting regarding unusual fluctuations in production and financial results.
  • Notify the Plant Manager and Northwest Regional Manager about any changes in the quality and quantity of raw material being received.
  • Oversee and ensure clean and safe work practices for the Seattle Division. Oversees the completion of the OSHA checklist and assists the Plant Manager with OSHA inspections and follow-up.
  • Must keep up-to-date records of all services to all machinery, and schedule times and dates for any major mechanical work. Must review all maintenance logs and keep the Plant Manager apprised on progress on maintenance jobs and potential maintenance related issues. Must delegate tasks to different shifts and follow up on progression of tasks.
  • Responsible for managing and tracking of plant supplies and communicate with the Plant Manager on the need to order additional supplies. Must have the organizational skills to maintain and organize a spare parts inventory.
  • Will be required to work with water lines, high-pressure steam pipes, hydraulic hoses, welding, cutting (plasma & torch) and brazing.
  • Must be able to maintain all major pieces of equipment, including the boiler, cookers, and presses, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Will be required to respond to after hour emergencies as they occur.
  • Assist the Plant Manager with ordering plant equipment and parts, including researching and evaluating different options, placing orders, and communicating with vendors and contractors throughout the process.
  • Must be able to direct others to repair gear drives.
  • Direct workers to maintain fans (Venting and Condensing) for the plant.
  • Must be able to direct repairs and work on hydraulic equipment.
  • Must be able to direct work on the installation and removal of heavy machinery and equipment.
  • Maintain boiler daily operations including water quality testing, safety checks and boiler chemical supplies.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the business. These responsibilities may change from time to time as business needs change over time.
  • Must conduct inspections with regulatory bodies, for insurance purposes, or as otherwise requested by management or Baker Corporate.
  • Must work with the Plant Manager in regard to maintaining any regulatory documents for equipment.
  • Interact with others in a professional, cooperative and ethical manner.
  • Follow department and Company procedures.
  • Keep up regular attendance and punctuality; regular attendance and punctuality are essential for the smooth operation of this Company. Any time off requests should be made 2 weeks in advance to the Plant Manager and the Northwest Regional Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the business. These responsibilities may change from time to time are business needs evolve over time.

Requirements
Qualifications (Knowledge Skills Abilities, professional certifications, education, experience, travel requirements)
  • High School degree or equivalent.
  • 3 or more years' experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • 3 or more years' experience working in an industrial plant setting. Rendering plant experience is a plus.
  • Less than 10% travel requirement.
  • 3 or more years of maintenance experience.
  • Knowledgeable of CMPAF (Cattle Material Prohibited in Animal Feed), FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) and APPI (Animal Protein Producers Industry) material procedures and documentation is a plus. Must be able to work at night.
  • Electrical knowledge; including motors, controls, variable frequency drives, etc.
  • Ability to perform basic plumbing repairs.
  • Strong organizational skills for recordkeeping.
  • Moderate to advanced computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Outlook.
  • Ability to speak, read and write clearly and proficiently in English. Understanding of a second language is a plus.

Physical Demands/Requirements
Constantly (over 2/3):
  • Communicates with vendors, contractors and co-workers and exchanges accurate information in-person, telephonically and via electronic devices/e-mail.
  • Operates and uses maintenance/mechanic tools including electrical hand tools.
  • Must be able to position self to maintain equipment or perform duties of repairing and maintaining vehicles and work equipment.
  • Must be able to move around industrial equipment in manufacturing facility.
  • Must be able to detect and observe equipment in need of repair
  • Exposed to manufacturing odors.

Frequently (1/3-2/3):
  • Operates computer and other office productivity machinery such as calculator, copy machine and printer.
  • Review documents, organizes data and detects accuracy of information
  • Move and transport material, equipment and tools up to 70 lbs with and without specialized lifting, moving and rigging equipment.
  • Moves across wet/slippery and uneven surfaces.
  • Exposed to materials that occasionally require use of PPE such as gloves (protect from heat).

Occasionally (under 1/3):
  • Exposed to work in outdoor weather conditions.
