THE CLASSICAL ACADEMY
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Title: Substitute Teacher/Paraprofessional                 Department: Human Resources
Date: Updated April 6, 2022                                      FLSA Status: Exempt
Full Day Teaching Assignment: $163.76 per day
Full Day Non-Teaching Assignment: $138.08 per day
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Performs related duties of a teacher or paraprofessional to provide continuity in the day-to-day responsibilities during the absence of the regular employee. Substitute teachers and paraprofessionals are employed on an as needed, on-call, day-to-day basis and are not guaranteed work on a regular basis.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:
Reports directly to the Substitute Coordinator
The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other non-essential or marginal duties that may be required.  The description may not include all functions performed by incumbents in various locations.  The Classical Academy reserves the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of this job at any time.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  

















  • Manages classroom and provides instructions according to plans as prepared by the classroom teacher.
  • Provides classroom environment which promotes active learning.
  • Assists the teacher with all aspects of the daily routine, including distributing and collecting supplies, lunchroom duty, recess, carpool, etc.
  • Works with students to help reinforce learning objectives.
  • Adheres to all TCA policies and procedures.
  • Uses appropriate judgment to always act in the best interest of students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required
  • Bachelor's Degree or 1-year substitute authorization from CDE required for Substitute teaching.

EXPERIENCE:
Prior teaching, tutoring, or other experience working with children or in a classroom setting is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:


  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a computer, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint), and the internet.

Contacts are generally of a nature requiring disseminating and discussing routine information but may occasionally involve sensitive issues or situations requiring confidentiality.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is normally performed in a classroom setting with occasional supervision duties such as carpool, special activities, recess, or lunchroom.
  • Required to work scheduled hours on a day-to-day basis. Work hours may vary depending on the needs of the schools and the substitute coordinator.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The following are some of the physical demands commonly associated with this position. They are included for informational purposes and are not all inclusive.

  • Typical demands require the employee to:
    • Spend majority of work time standing and walking while performing job duties
    • Occasionally lift burdens weighing up to 30 lbs. and occasionally push/pull burdens weighing up to 100 lbs.
    • Frequently use eye, hand, and finger coordination to enable the use of a computer, other classroom equipment, and writing utensils

COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS:
The following are some of the cognitive functions commonly associated with this position. They are included for informational purposes and are not all-inclusive:
The staff member may be required to analyze, communicate, compare, compile, compute, coordinate, copy, evaluate, instruct, negotiate, synthesize, reason, and use interpersonal skills.
PAID SICK LEAVE COMPENSATION: Temporary/Substitute/Itinerant staff receive an amount of paid sick leave calculated based on an accrual rate of one hour earned for every 30 hours worked, in accordance with the Colorado Healthy Families Workplace Act.
Conditions of Employment:
Per the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, the selected applicant shall be required to verify, within 72 hours of employment, her/his legal right to be employed in the United States.
