QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires knowledge of proper English usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation; proper office methods, techniques and procedures; knowledge of the Braille system and transcription; basic problems and learning disabilities associated with the visually handicapped.
Must possess the skill to transcribe Braille at a speed of 30 net wpm; understand and communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; maintain routine records and reports; perform routine clerical work; operate standard office equipment such as typewriter, duplicating machines, computer terminal, etc.; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Must possess the ability to prepare materials in Braille and large type; duplicate materials from master copies of class materials; maintain textbook shelves for visually handicapped students; confers with teachers, parents, program supervisors, and administrators regarding students' progress; accompanies students on field trips; takes and maintains classroom inventory; orders books and supplies; performs other related duties as required.
Two years of experience as a Braille typist either paid or volunteer. Completion of the twelfth grade is required, preferably supplemented by college level courses.
A RECENT TYPING CERTIFICATE MUST ACCOMPANY THE APPLICATION IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED.
A CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK WILL BE REQUIRED OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT.
DUTIES OF POSITION: Perform specialized duties in transcribing to and from Braille the daily worksheets, tests, textbooks, and other instructional materials used by blind and visually handicapped students. Employees in this classification receive general to limited supervision from a school site administrator or his/her designate within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employee in this position works closely with and under the supervision of a certificated resource teacher for the visually handicapped and requires a high degree of proficiency and use of Braille to convey information to assigned students.
STARTING SALARY: $3,678.50 (monthly)
NUMBER OF MONTHS: 9.4 (to begin as soon as possible)
NUMBER OF HOURS: 8 (daily working hours to be 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
