What is text editing?

Text editing refers to the process of reviewing, revising, and correcting written content to improve its clarity, accuracy, and overall quality. Text editors may check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, style consistency, and flow, ensuring that the document meets its intended purpose and audience. This role is essential in publishing, journalism, academia, and many other fields where clear communication is critical. A text editor may also suggest structural changes or rewrite portions of the text to enhance readability and coherence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a text editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Text Editor, you need excellent language proficiency, attention to detail, and a strong grasp of grammar, style, and syntax, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editing tools like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and content management systems (CMS) is typically required, and certifications such as those from the Editorial Freelancers Association can be beneficial. Strong communication, time management, and collaboration skills help editors work effectively with writers and meet deadlines. These competencies ensure polished, accurate, and engaging content that meets both organizational standards and audience expectations.

What are some common challenges faced by text editors when working with multiple authors or contributors on a project?

Text editors frequently encounter challenges related to maintaining consistency in style, tone, and formatting when working with content from multiple authors. Coordinating edits, resolving discrepancies, and ensuring that all contributors adhere to publication guidelines require strong communication and meticulous attention to detail. Successful text editors often develop clear editorial guidelines and use collaborative tools to streamline feedback and revisions, ensuring a cohesive final product while respecting each author's voice.

Job description

At MJH Life Sciences our success is measured by your success! If you set your standards high and want to contribute to a winning team, we'll provide you with every opportunity to help grow our company and your career. Our associates come from all backgrounds, sharing one key quality: determination to succeed. We value being Service Focused, having a Passion for Winning, Innovation, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork. Nothing means more to us than hiring people with these attributes. If you believe you're right for the job, this is the place to prove it!
We are seeking a Copy Editor, Clinical and Continuing Medical Education to ensure that all editorial print and online materials meet the highest standards of accuracy, clarity, and quality. You will copyedit clinical and CME content across multiple formats and publications, fact-check as needed, maintain strict adherence to style guidelines, and meet hard production deadlines across concurrent deliverables. This role requires active, fluent use of AI as a core part of the editing workflow - not as a supplement, but as a standard tool that makes your work faster, sharper, and more consistent.
What You'll Do
  • Copyedit electronic and print projects for clinical, peer-reviewed publications and CME and CE manuscripts across formats including MS Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel, hard copy, video transcripts, e-books, web pages, and creative collateral
  • Integrate AI tools - including Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini - directly into your editing workflow, using prompts, queries, and skills you have developed to improve consistency, catch errors, and work more efficiently across high-volume production schedules
  • Proofread and correct electronic files, page proofs, and final artwork for grammar, spelling, and style, ensuring all materials are error-free before publication
  • Identify inconsistencies, improve unclear or awkward language in body copy, and strengthen headlines and display type - while respecting CME and CE and Medical and Legal Review guidelines that may take precedence over editorial style
  • Check and apply proofing and design changes to documents and layouts using Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe InCopy
  • Ensure all corporate, product branding, legal, and Pharmaceutical Promotion Compliance guidelines are explicitly followed across all deliverables
  • Maintain strict adherence to production deadlines across multiple concurrent editorial projects
  • Collaborate across departments - editorial, events, marketing, and promotional - contributing to a team culture where members support one another and maintain shared standards of quality

What Sets You Apart
  • At least 3 years of editing and fact-checking experience, preferably in medical or scientific publishing
  • Demonstrated, active use of AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini as part of your editing process - including the ability to build prompts, develop reusable queries, and apply AI to improve editing accuracy and throughput
  • Strong command of AMA Manual of Style 11th Edition and AP Stylebook, with the ability to apply and balance multiple style frameworks across publication types
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint including track changes; Adobe Acrobat Pro experience preferred
  • Familiarity with Adobe InCopy, content management systems, and web publishing tools
  • Familiarity with design principles, typography, page layout, text formatting, and commercial printing and prepress norms
  • Proven ability to meet hard deadlines consistently in a production environment while managing multiple concurrent deliverables without sacrificing quality
  • Strong collaborative instincts - you are a team player who communicates clearly, shares knowledge openly, and supports colleagues across the department
  • Advanced degree in a scientific field, BELS certification, or CSE certification preferred
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university required

AI Capability Expectation
Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate how they are currently using AI as part of their editing workflow. This includes:
  • Specific tools in active use and concrete examples of how they are applied to copyediting, proofreading, fact-checking, or style consistency tasks
  • Prompts, queries, or AI workflows you have developed or refined to improve the accuracy and efficiency of your editing process
  • How you validate and verify AI-assisted edits against source documents and style guides to ensure nothing is accepted without editorial judgment
  • Bonus: examples of AI-enhanced editing workflows that improved throughput, consistency, or error rates on clinical or CME content

Compensation Range
$55,000 to $60,000 per year, depending on qualifications. Eligible for annual company bonus program or commission incentive based on role. Compensation will depend on factors including educational background, skills, and professional experience.
Benefits Overview
We are proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:
  • Hybrid work schedule
  • Health insurance through Cigna (medical and dental)
  • Vision coverage through VSP
  • Pharmacy benefits through OptumRx
  • FSA, HSA, Dependent Care FSA, and Limited Purpose FSA options
  • 401(k) and Roth 401(k) with company match
  • Pet discount program with PetAssure
  • Norton LifeLock identity theft protection
  • Employee Assistance Program through NYLGBS
  • Fertility benefits through Progyny
  • Commuter benefits
  • Company-paid Short-Term and Long-Term Disability
  • Voluntary Term Life and AD&D Insurance, plus Universal Life options
  • Supplemental Aflac coverage: Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity
  • Discounts and rewards through BenefitHub

Our Operating Standard
We operate with discipline, clarity, and accountability. The ability to effectively leverage AI to improve speed, quality, and output is an expectation in this role, not a preference.
