How much do text counseling jobs pay per hour?

What is text counseling?

A Text Counseling job involves providing emotional support, guidance, and crisis intervention to individuals through text-based communication. Counselors typically work for mental health organizations, crisis hotlines, or online platforms, assisting people who may be struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or other personal challenges. They use active listening, empathy, and problem-solving skills to help individuals manage their emotions and find appropriate resources. This role requires strong written communication skills, emotional resilience, and training in crisis intervention techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in text counseling?

To thrive in Text Counseling, strong written communication skills, active listening, and a background in psychology, social work, or counseling are essential, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with secure messaging platforms and client management systems is common, with some employers requiring certification in crisis intervention or mental health first aid. Empathy, patience, and the ability to maintain confidentiality stand out as highly valued soft skills. These competencies are vital to provide effective, timely support to clients while ensuring their safety and privacy during sensitive conversations.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals working in text counseling?

Text counselors often handle multiple clients simultaneously and must adapt quickly to a wide range of emotional situations, requiring focus and quick critical thinking. The lack of nonverbal cues in text-based communication can make it more challenging to gauge a client’s emotional state, so counselors need strong interpretive skills and must clarify meaning frequently. Additionally, maintaining clear boundaries while providing empathetic support is crucial for both client well-being and counselor self-care. Most teams have supervision or peer support systems in place to help manage challenging conversations and promote ongoing professional development.

How to become a text counseling counselor?

To become a text counseling counselor, individuals typically need a relevant mental health or counseling degree, such as a bachelor's or master's in psychology, social work, or counseling. Certification or licensure may be required depending on the region, and strong communication skills, empathy, and familiarity with digital communication tools are essential for providing effective online support.

Job description

Position Overview

Helping Hands Mental Healthcare LTD is excited to invite applications for the position of Licensed Mental Health Counselor. We are looking for dedicated professionals who are not only passionate about mental health but also eager to deliver impactful therapy to clients from the comfort of their own homes. This full-time remote role is perfect for licensed professionals seeking flexibility, competitive compensation, and a supportive environment.

About the Organization

Helping Hands Mental Healthcare LTD is a leading provider of mental health services in Austin, Texas, committed to improving the lives of our clients through effective counseling and therapeutic strategies. We pride ourselves on creating a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere for our clients and our staff, fostering a culture of care and respect. Our mission is to empower individuals by offering them the support and tools necessary for achieving better mental health outcomes.

Work Environment

This role allows you to operate from a fully remote setting, offering you the autonomy to design a work schedule that balances your professional and personal life. As a telehealth provider, you will conduct sessions through a user-friendly therapy platform that provides a virtual private office for live video and text counseling. Minimal administrative tasks mean you can focus your time where it matters most—supporting your clients.

Key Responsibilities

In your role as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Conducting individual counseling sessions via secure video chat to support clients in improving their mental health.
  • Facilitating open discussions to help clients express their emotions and experiences, fostering self-insight and personal growth.
  • Acting as an advocate for your clients, assisting them in setting and achieving therapeutic goals.
  • Assessing clients’ mental health, devising individualized treatment plans, and implementing solutions effectively based on your professional expertise.
Patient Population / Client Focus

Your work will primarily involve engaging with well-screened adult clients who present with low-acuity mental health concerns. We ensure that all clients are stable adults, which allows you to provide targeted therapy without the complexity of dealing with severe mental health cases. Furthermore, we actively match clients to therapists based on demographics and specialties, ensuring a conducive therapeutic alliance.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • A completed Master's degree in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Mental Health Counseling, or Psychology is required.
  • A full and unrestricted state license in one of the following: Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Please note that provisional licenses are not accepted, and candidates must be in good standing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a sympathetic nature are crucial for effectively supporting clients.
  • Comfortable using technology and computer systems to facilitate virtual therapy sessions.
Preferred Experience

While a minimum of 2 years of related mental health counseling experience is required, candidates with additional experience or specialized training in certain therapeutic modalities will be seen as advantageous. Specific therapy methods and an understanding of diverse client demographics will enhance your effectiveness in this role.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation for this role falls between USD 90,000 and 104,000 annually, depending on your hours worked and experience. We also offer a robust benefits package that includes:

  • A sign-on bonus to help kickstart your journey with us.
  • Weekly direct deposit for smooth financial management.
  • A monthly healthcare stipend for full-time counselors to support personal health needs.
