What is a test lab technician?

Test Lab Technicians are professionals responsible for conducting tests and experiments on materials, products, or equipment in a laboratory setting. They set up and operate laboratory instruments, record and analyze data, and ensure that tests are performed according to established protocols. Their work helps ensure product quality, safety, and compliance with regulatory standards across industries such as manufacturing, electronics, and pharmaceuticals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test lab technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Lab Technician, you need a solid understanding of laboratory procedures, test methodologies, and safety protocols, often supported by an associate's degree or relevant technical certification. Familiarity with laboratory instruments, calibration tools, and data management systems such as LIMS is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate test results, maintain safety standards, and support efficient teamwork in laboratory environments.

What are some typical challenges a test lab technician might face, and how can they be addressed?

Test Lab Technicians often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, managing tight testing deadlines, and ensuring precise documentation of results. Adaptability and strong problem-solving skills are crucial for quickly diagnosing and resolving technical issues. Effective communication with engineers and other team members also helps ensure that test procedures align with project requirements and that any anomalies are reported and addressed promptly. Staying organized and maintaining a proactive approach to equipment maintenance can further help minimize disruptions.

What is the difference between Test Lab Technician vs Quality Control Technician?

AspectTest Lab TechnicianQuality Control Technician
Required CertificationsOften requires technical certifications or training in testing proceduresMay require quality assurance or industry-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentLaboratory settings, testing facilities, manufacturing plantsManufacturing sites, production lines, quality assurance departments
Industry UsageUsed across electronics, aerospace, manufacturing, and tech industriesCommon in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods
Primary FocusPerforming tests, recording data, ensuring product complianceInspecting products, identifying defects, maintaining quality standards

While both roles focus on product quality, Test Lab Technicians primarily conduct tests and analyze data in laboratory settings, whereas Quality Control Technicians focus on inspecting and ensuring products meet quality standards during manufacturing. Both roles are essential for maintaining product integrity but differ in their specific responsibilities and work environments.

How much is a test lab technician paid?

The average salary for a test lab technician typically ranges from $40,000 to $60,000 per year, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced technicians with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher wages.

Key responsibilities

  • Operate and support wafer-level test setups for silicon photonics and MEMS-based devices

  • Troubleshoot test setups and support root cause analysis of failures

Job description

About us

nEye.ai, a well-funded optical switch startup, is poised to revolutionize the future of data centers. nEyeโ€™s MEMS-based silicon photonics optical circuit switches (OCS) eliminate critical bottlenecks in AI processing by enabling direct optical connections among thousands of GPUs and memory units. The company's OCS is an ultra-low power consumption, high radix, compact chip-scale design, offering hyperscale data centers enhanced performance, efficiency, and scalability.

Job Overview

We are looking for a highly skilled photonics test technician with experience in precision optical, photonics, or MEMS environments: someone who can execute wafer-level testing with rigor while also applying judgment to the data they observe.

You will be responsible for running wafer-level tests and operating advanced metrology systems, but just as importantly, you will serve as a first line of defense for data quality, for example identifying anomalies, spotting inconsistencies, and flagging issues to engineering.

This role is ideal for someone who has spent years working handsโ€‘on with high-end optical systems or metrology tools, understands the scale and precision involved, and knows when something โ€œdoesnโ€™t look right.โ€

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and support wafer-level test setups for silicon photonics and MEMS-based devices

  • Load wafers, execute test sequences, and ensure consistent, high-quality test execution

  • Work with high-precision optical and metrology equipment to collect measurement data

  • Perform optical alignment and fiber-based test setups as needed

  • Monitor test outputs and identify anomalies, drift, or unexpected behavior in data

  • Proactively flag irregularities to engineers, providing clear observations and context

  • Troubleshoot test setups and support root cause analysis of failures

  • Maintain and calibrate lab equipment to ensure accuracy and repeatability

  • Accurately document test procedures, results, and observations

  • Support engineers in debugging, validation, and test optimization efforts

  • Contribute to improving lab workflows, test processes, and overall data quality

Required Qualifications
  • Associateโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or related field (or equivalent handsโ€‘on experience)

  • Equivalent handsโ€‘on industry experience is highly valued; a formal degree is not required for this role

  • Strong handsโ€‘on experience with single mode fiber optics

  • Experience working in precision optical, photonics, or MEMS environments

  • Experience operating highโ€‘end metrology or measurement equipment

  • Background in waferโ€‘level testing, semiconductor environments, or advanced hardware labs

  • Proven ability to execute structured test procedures with consistency and accuracy

  • Experience identifying test anomalies, system issues, or data inconsistencies

  • Familiarity with lab instrumentation (e.g., optical setups, oscilloscopes, power meters, etc.)

  • Comfortable working in cleanroom or controlled lab environments

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow complex procedures

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with silicon photonics or optical device testing

  • Experience working with laser systems, optical alignment, or fiber coupling

  • Familiarity with wafer probing, optical characterization, or MEMS devices

  • Experience supporting R&D or earlyโ€‘stage product development environments

$45 - $55 an hour

Starting salary and title will depend on, and be commensurate with, relevant industry experience, skills, training, education, market demands, and the ultimate job duties and requirements.

nEye.ai is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
