What is a test engineer?

Test Engineers are professionals responsible for evaluating and ensuring the quality of products, typically software or hardware, by designing and executing tests. They identify bugs, glitches, or any issues that might affect the user experience or product performance. Test Engineers also document test results, collaborate with developers to resolve issues, and help improve processes to prevent future problems. Their work is critical in delivering reliable and high-quality products to customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, quality assurance principles, and test case design, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, as well as experience with bug tracking systems and scripting languages, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating with development teams. These skills ensure the delivery of reliable, high-quality products by efficiently detecting and resolving software defects.

How do test engineers typically collaborate with development and product teams during a project?

Test Engineers play a crucial role in cross-functional teams by working closely with developers and product managers throughout the software development lifecycle. They participate in requirement reviews, design discussions, and sprint planning meetings to ensure testability and clarity of features. Regular communication helps identify potential issues early, align on acceptance criteria, and prioritize testing efforts. This collaborative approach helps deliver higher-quality products and fosters a culture of continuous improvement.

What is the difference between Test Engineer vs QA Analyst?

AspectTest EngineerQA Analyst

Test Engineers focus on designing, executing, and automating tests to ensure software quality, often working closely with developers. QA Analysts primarily analyze quality processes, develop testing plans, and ensure compliance with standards. While both roles aim to improve product quality, Test Engineers are more technical and automation-oriented, whereas QA Analysts emphasize process and manual testing. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job role.

How much does a test engineer get paid?

The average salary for a test engineer varies by experience and location but typically ranges from $60,000 to $100,000 annually. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced test engineers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in competitive markets or with expertise in automation tools.

Is it hard to be a test engineer?

Becoming a test engineer requires a strong understanding of software development, testing methodologies, and tools such as automation frameworks. The role can be challenging due to the need for attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under deadlines, but it is manageable with proper training and experience.

Job description

Overview
Corporate Tools is hiring a Sr. Quality Assurance Engineer. You will be a traditional company employee. This is a remote position, but if you're near one of our local offices, you're welcome to come hangout with us in-office as well. Our main offices are in Post Falls, ID, and Spokane, WA; we also have satellite offices in Austin, TX, and Salt Lake City, UT. You'll be working 40 hours a week and, of course, enjoy great company benefits.
As a Senior Quality Assurance Engineer at Corporate Tools, you'll help us build better software by senioring (we know it's not a word, but you still get it) our QA efforts with a thoughtful, hands-on approach. You'll collaborate closely with developers, product managers, and designers to ensure our web and software products meet high standards of usability, reliability, and overall quality. You'll take the lead on creating and maintaining meaningful automated test suites, and you won't hesitate to dig into a manual test when it makes sense. You'll work in an agile environment, helping us scope and test new features, squash bugs, and build testing into the development process from the ground up-not as an afterthought. You'll also serve as a mentor and resource for your fellow QA engineers, sharing best practices and helping us all level up. Most importantly, you'll bring curiosity, care, and a strong sense of ownership to everything you do.
Wage
Up to $120,000 / year
Benefits
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental and vision for employees
  • Annual review with raise option
  • 22 days Paid Time Off accrued annually, and 4 holidays
    • After 3 years, PTO increases to 29 days. Employees transition to flexible time off after 5 years with the company-not accrued, not capped, take time off when you want
    • The 4 holidays are: New Year's Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Up to 6% company matching 401(k) with no vesting period
  • Quarterly allowance
    • Use to make your remote work set up more comfortable, for continuing education classes, a plant for your desk, coffee for your coworker, a massage for yourself... really, whatever
  • Open concept office with friendly coworkers
  • Creative environment where you can make a difference
  • No dumb benefits like free dog walking on the weekends that snobby hipster places have to make you feel cool, but mathematically won't cost the company much money because you won't use it
  • Trail Mix Bar - oh yeah

Responsibilities
  • Conducts Agile QA for bugs and stories completed by the development team.
  • Conducts regression tests against software applications.
  • Build proficiency in writing and maintaining automated tests.
  • Identify, document, and track defects and issues, providing clear and detailed descriptions with steps to reproduce and their potential impact on end-users.
  • Evaluate the user experience of products, providing feedback on usability and accessibility of new and existing features.
  • Anticipate impacts of new features beyond ticket acceptance criteria and develop appropriate edge case tests.
  • Prior to large feature or product releases, collaborate closely with product teams to plan and implement thorough testing.
  • Analyze common bugs found through QA processes and work with software and frontend devs to address them in earlier phases of the development process.
  • Act as a mentor and lead by example, demonstrating effective testing, communication and ticket management techniques.

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent certification (e.g. ISTQB).
  • At least 4 years of experience in leading testing efforts for complex software or web products, including test planning and execution.
  • Experience writing and maintaining large, automated test suites.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Agile methodologies, and Version Control Systems like Git.
  • Proficiency with technical tools used for testing (e.g. Android Studio, Selenium, Playwright, Appium, Postman).
  • Knowledge of SQL for database testing and verification.
  • Able to work in an agile environment with a focus on continuous integration.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience mentoring/coaching in a technical environment.
  • Experience using Jira and Confluence to track and communicate actions, priorities, and goals.
