Test Engineer Manager information

What is a test engineer manager?

A Test Engineer Manager is a professional who oversees a team of test engineers responsible for ensuring the quality and reliability of software or hardware products. They coordinate testing activities, develop test strategies, manage resources, and communicate with other departments to meet project goals. In addition to technical oversight, they are responsible for mentoring team members, setting performance goals, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The role requires strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test engineer manager?

To thrive as a Test Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software testing, quality assurance methodologies, and leadership experience, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), test management systems, and relevant certifications like ISTQB is highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team leadership skills help you effectively coordinate testing teams and deliver high-quality results. These competencies ensure reliable product releases, efficient team performance, and alignment with organizational quality standards.

How does a test engineer manager typically collaborate with development and QA teams to ensure product quality?

A Test Engineer Manager plays a key role in bridging the gap between development and QA teams by facilitating communication, aligning testing strategies with project goals, and ensuring that feedback loops are efficient. They often hold regular meetings to discuss progress, address roadblocks, and prioritize testing efforts based on development timelines. Additionally, they may help implement automated testing frameworks and oversee the integration of new QA tools, fostering an environment where both teams can work closely to deliver high-quality products on schedule.

What is the difference between Test Engineer Manager vs Test Engineer?

With a strong commitment to innovation and excellence, we have established ourselves as the industry leader. Our cutting-edge technologies and solutions are trusted by military and commercial customers worldwide. We are currently seeking a Aerospace Test Engineer to join our Ottawa based team with regular travel to our testing locations mainly in the United States!

What will you be doing?

  • Plan, execute, and support verification activities across hardware, software, and complete systems.
  • Create, refine, and carry out test procedures covering mechanical assemblies, electronics, and software.
  • Contribute to the integration and verification of sensors, avionics, actuators, and related subsystems.
  • Support ground and flight-test activities, including preparation, execution, data collection, and post-test analysis.
  • Participate in testing conducted at third-party facilities, including thermal, vibration, shock, and other environmental qualification activities.
  • Support EMI/EMC testing, troubleshooting, and follow-up mitigation activities.
  • Capture, analyze, and report test results, ensuring findings are accurately documented and communicated.
  • Investigate unexpected test results and system anomalies, contributing to root-cause investigations and issue resolution.
  • Maintain verification records, test reports, procedures, and requirements traceability throughout the development process.
  • Provide engineering support for production and field issues, particularly when standard troubleshooting has not identified the cause.
  • Diagnose complex hardware, software, and system failures using available logs, schematics, instrumentation, and test data.
  • Recreate production or field failures in a controlled laboratory environment and help establish appropriate corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to implement, validate, and document corrective measures.
  • Support domestic and international field-testing activities, including travel to U.S. test locations and external environmental and EMI/EMC facilities. Travel is expected to be approximately 10-25%.

What do we need from you?

  • A college diploma or Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Computer, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in testing, verification, system integration, or a comparable engineering environment.
  • Practical knowledge of embedded systems, including microcontrollers, sensors, and power-related systems.
  • Working familiarity with software test and debugging using C, C++, Python, or comparable programming languages.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory and test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and data acquisition (DAQ) systems.
  • Experience performing system-level verification for aerospace, autonomous, or similarly complex systems is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with environmental test methods and equipment, including thermal chambers and vibration testing, is beneficial.
  • An understanding of EMI/EMC testing, troubleshooting, and mitigation techniques.
  • Knowledge of requirements-driven verification practices and the preparation and maintenance of test documentation.
  • Flexibility to participate in multi-day test campaigns and work periodically outdoors or within industrial test environments.
