What is a test engineer contractor?

Test Engineer Contractors are professionals who are hired on a temporary or project basis to design, develop, and execute tests on products, software, or systems to ensure they meet quality standards. Unlike full-time employees, contractors typically work for a set duration and may support multiple organizations or projects. Their responsibilities include creating test plans, identifying bugs, and collaborating with development teams to resolve issues. Test Engineer Contractors bring specialized skills and flexibility, making them valuable for organizations with short-term testing needs or peak workloads.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test engineer contractor?

To thrive as a Test Engineer Contractor, you need a solid background in software testing methodologies, test case design, and a relevant technical degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with automated testing tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), bug tracking systems, and scripting languages is commonly required, along with certifications like ISTQB being advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure reliable test coverage, efficient issue identification, and seamless collaboration with development teams to deliver high-quality software.

What are some common challenges faced by test engineer contractors when joining a new project team?

Test Engineer Contractors often encounter challenges such as quickly learning new systems, tools, and workflows specific to the client’s environment. Adapting to established team dynamics and understanding project-specific testing requirements can require rapid onboarding. Additionally, contractors must efficiently communicate with permanent team members and other stakeholders to ensure alignment on testing objectives and deliverables, often within tight project timelines. Building trust and demonstrating their expertise early on can help contractors integrate smoothly and contribute effectively.

Job description

We're ALTEN Technology USA, an engineering company helping clients bring groundbreaking ideas to life—from advancing space exploration and life-saving medical devices to building autonomous electric vehicles. With 3,000+ experts across North America, we partner with leading companies in aerospace, medical devices, robotics, automotive, commercial vehicles, EVs, rail, and more.

As part of the global ALTEN Group—57,000+ engineers in 30 countries—we deliver across the entire product development cycle, from consulting to full project outsourcing.

When you join ALTEN Technology USA, you'll collaborate on some of the world's toughest engineering challenges, supported by mentorship, career growth opportunities, and comprehensive benefits. We take pride in fostering a culture where employees feel valued, supported, and inspired to grow.

We are seeking an experienced, high-performing Durability Test Engineer to join our team dedicated to revolutionizing urban mobility. This role focuses specifically on the whole-vehicle and in-service durability testing of our autonomous robotaxi, ensuring its long-term reliability through real-world and proving ground validation.

Responsibilities

  • Vehicle-Level Test Plan Development: Design, document, and manage comprehensive whole-vehicle durability and accelerated mileage accumulation (AMA) test plans across various terrains and environmental conditions.
  • Proving Ground and Road Testing Execution: Lead and execute vehicle durability tests at external proving grounds, public roads, and specialized test facilities, ensuring adherence to rigorous test cycles and safety protocols.
  • Data Acquisition (DAQ) Setup and Testing: Plan and execute on-vehicle instrumentation and data acquisition tests to accurately capture loads, strains, and vibrations on critical vehicle structures and systems.
  • In-Service Failure Analysis: Diagnose and investigate durability-related failures that occur during on-road testing or early field operation, determining the root cause through hands-on inspection and data analysis.
  • Component Durability Validation: Track and verify the performance and reliability of newly integrated components (suspension, steering, brakes, etc.) during vehicle-level durability testing to ensure their life and correct function.
  • Reporting and Feedback Loop: Generate clear, detailed reports summarizing test results, vehicle degradation rates, and identified failure modes. Proactively communicate actionable findings and proposed design mitigations to the Vehicle Design and CAE teams.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 3+ years of professional experience in whole-vehicle durability testing, road load data acquisition (RLDA), or performance validation within the automotive or heavy equipment industry. Experience with electric vehicles (EVs) is highly desirable. Technical Skills:
  • Proven, hands-on experience with on-vehicle instrumentation setup, including strain gauges, accelerometers, displacement transducers, and thermocouple installation.
  • Experience with setting up and operating multi-channel data acquisition (DAQ) hardware (e.g., Somat, HBM, Dewetron) for vehicle testing.
  • Working knowledge in data processing and analysis using tools like nCode GlyphWorks, MATLAB, or Python for large-scale time-series data.
  • Familiarity with common automotive proving ground test procedures and standards (e.g., Belgian Block, potholes, rough road closures)

Salary Range: $80,000-$90,000/K
