What is the difference between Tesla Autopilot Engineer vs Tesla Software Engineer?

AspectTesla Autopilot EngineerTesla Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field; experience in autonomous systemsBachelor's/Master's in Computer Science or related; coding and software development skills
Work EnvironmentAutonomous vehicle systems, sensor integration, real-world testingSoftware development, coding, debugging, and system design
Industry UsageAutonomous driving, vehicle automationGeneral software development across various domains

Tesla Autopilot Engineers focus on developing and testing autonomous driving features, working closely with sensors and vehicle hardware. Tesla Software Engineers develop a broad range of software applications, including those used in Tesla vehicles but also in other tech areas. While both roles require strong programming skills, Autopilot Engineers specialize in autonomous systems, making their work more hardware and sensor-oriented.

What does a Tesla Autopilot Engineer do?

A Tesla Autopilot Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and improving the autonomous driving features in Tesla vehicles. They work on advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), integrating software and hardware to enable vehicles to perceive their environment, make decisions, and drive safely with minimal human input. This role involves working with technologies such as computer vision, machine learning, sensor fusion, and real-time data processing. Collaboration with hardware engineers, software developers, and data scientists is also a key part of the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tesla Autopilot Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tesla Autopilot Engineer, you need a robust background in computer science, robotics, or electrical engineering, with expertise in machine learning, computer vision, and autonomous systems. Familiarity with programming languages like Python and C++, experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow or PyTorch), and knowledge of automotive sensors and embedded systems are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help engineers excel in this innovative environment. These skills are crucial for developing safe, reliable, and advanced self-driving technologies that meet Tesla’s high standards for performance and safety.

What are some common challenges faced by Tesla Autopilot Engineers when integrating new features into the existing system?

Tesla Autopilot Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring new features are compatible with the complex, real-time systems already in place. Balancing innovative development while maintaining system reliability and safety is crucial, as any update must undergo rigorous testing and validation. Collaborating closely with hardware, software, and testing teams is essential to identify and resolve issues early, and to ensure seamless deployment to millions of vehicles worldwide. Additionally, engineers must stay current with advancements in AI and sensor technology to keep Autopilot at the forefront of industry standards.

Job description

Field AI is transforming how robots interact with the real world. We are building risk-aware, reliable, and field-ready AI systems that address the most complex challenges in robotics, unlocking the full potential of embodied intelligence. We go beyond typical data-driven approaches or pure transformer-based architectures, and are charting a new course, with already-globally-deployed solutions delivering real-world results and rapidly improving models through real-field applications.

We’re looking for a Software Engineer, Product to build and own customer-facing products at the intersection of embodied AI, robotics, and real-world data. You’ll work closely with AI, robotics, product, and commercial teams to transform robotically captured data from complex construction environments into intuitive, high-impact software used on active job sites around the world.

This is a hands-on role for engineers who enjoy shipping real products, operating close to customers, and seeing their work deployed beyond a lab or dashboard.
What You Will Get To Do
  • Own full-stack product features from design through production
  • Build scalable backend services using Node.js (Express) and Python
  • Develop modern, high-performance frontends using React
  • Implement 3D visualization features using Three.js / WebGL
  • Design APIs, data models, and system architectures using clean design principlesPartner closely with AI, robotics, product, and commercial teams
  • Debug performance issues and optimize rendering, data, and API pipelinesContribute to shared codebases and raise engineering quality through reviews and collaboration
What You Have
  • Typically 5–10+ years of experience building and shipping production software
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript, JavaScript, Node.js, and React
  • Solid system design skills across data modeling, APIs, and UI/UX tradeoffsExperience working with MongoDB and Redis (or similar databases)Hands-on experience deploying and operating applications in AWS (or equivalent cloud platforms)
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across technical and non-technical teams
What Will Set You Apart
  • Experience with BIM or construction technology workflows
  • Experience with 3D graphics technologies (Three.js, WebGL, shaders, or similar)
  • Familiarity with monorepo architectures (Nx, Lerna)
  • Experience integrating with Autodesk platforms (Revit, APS/Forge)Proficiency using the AWS SDK
  • Background working on complex, data-rich, or real-time systems
Our salary range is generous and we take into consideration an individual's background and experience in determining final salary; base pay offered may vary considerably depending on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Why Join Field AI?
