Job description

The Lab Technician plays a critical role in terminal operations by ensuring laboratory equipment is properly calibrated, maintained, and utilized in accordance with industry standards. This position is responsible for testing and certifying materials in compliance with AASHTO, ASTM, and Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements. The Lab Technician must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and proficient in computer applications.
Essential Job Duties
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Participate in weekly safety meetings.
  • Attend and obtain Binder Course Certification from the Asphalt Institute.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is properly calibrated and maintained.
  • Obtain samples from all tanks and truck loading lines for in-line blending.
  • Perform material testing in accordance with applicable specifications.
  • Retain all samples per DOT requirements.
  • Maintain the Quality Control Plan in accordance with DOT standards.
  • Upload testing information into DOT databases as required.
  • Organize and document testing results in Excel spreadsheets in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment.
  • Order laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Promote teamwork and maintain open communication with employees.
  • Exchange information and gather ideas to improve processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Previous laboratory experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Positive, professional, and courteous demeanor.
  • Ability to work effectively in team and individual settings.
  • Strong professional communication skills, especially when working with DOT personnel.
  • Willingness to assume additional responsibilities as needed.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Excel.

Works under general supervision with clearly defined objectives. Plans and organizes work independently, referring unusual or complex matters to management as needed.
